I was working around the slave cylinder when I relised that the heatshielding/insulation around the bellhouseing area might have large amounts of asbestos. Can anyone calm my fears of this being asbestos insulation and if it is asbestos how can I safely remove it and replace it with newier insulation material.

I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure it's just fiberglass. I'd suggest you spray some high temperature adhesive on the stuff and cover it with heavy duty aluminum foil.

dude, aspestos was outlawed in the early 70's, and it was only used in brake pads. Thats fiberglass mat. Ok it is still used in certain applications but having worked on these cars enough.....

If it is asbestos, try not to disturb it. The fibers have to friable (ie.,broken apart), before you even begin to be at a possible risk of inhaling any fibers.

I agree that perhaps somebody should have it tested. Every so often, this topic comes up on here, and nobody has a definitive answer. I would offer to, providing it's not expensive, and somebody can tell me which heat guard I should pull the insulation from to get the stuff that people think is asbestos.
