Unhappy custom cat delete pipe.

well. i went o amuffler shop and got some pipe and some muffler clamps.
since ive been running with a gutted cat anyway I figured ill just get rid of it.
The cat in the backyard had broken at the downpipe so I just took it with me and got the pipe flared to fit it and the end of the cat. total price of 18 bucks.

verdict. it sounds like crap.... above 4000 rpm it sounds alright but right off of idle and right below 3000 it sounds like a POS mustang. the ones that sound like a bunch of rattling cans. so tomorrow Im going to see what kind of mufflers the 350Z's have and perhaps buy one of those from the dealer. then cut off my muffler and muffler clamp that one on (muffler clamps are cool!)

pics and video.

I've heard that test pipes don't sound that great. I guess I won't attempt it then. Video?

yeah. im thinking that the pipe may be a little too small. they had to flare it a good bit on both ends.

mmmm...350Z mufflers just sound so good. i wonder If I can really get one?

Doesn't seem to sound too bad in higher rpms, loud... I can sort of see how it would be annoying on the low end though. Any differences in power?

I thought that you don't want to remove the cat on a NA motor, because you need a certain amount of backpressure. Please correct me if I am wrong.

350Z mufflers sound good because of the VQ that's under the hood. Just get a nice Borla muffler and you'll be set. Quality is second to none.

Have you considered a glasspack??

One way to help the noise issue is to buy a cheap resonator & weld it into the center of your pipe- weld it right about where the cat would have been- this will make a noticeable dif in the noise- these cars do sound pretty awful w/out cats, but, a good resonator in it's place can make it work well- you need to make sure you have the same type of metal if you're going to weld though - BTW- Tony G used to have THREE Borla XR1's on his car- he had one where the cat had been, one in hte diagonal section & one as a rear muffler- I've got one that I need to weld into the diagonal section of my SFR set-up- I hate the noise of my car right now- hence the soon-to-be addition- I have one of the old Bullet mufflers though, &, they're pretty loud- Tim came out w/quiter ones a few months later- I'll probably look into one of those too.... anyway, just food for thought... $18 for a pipe like that sounds pretty cool actually- if larger diamteres weren't too much more expensive, it might be a cool thing to look into... what diamter is your's anyway?

Yeah! But on NAs it sound horrid. I went ahead and bolted in a Magnaflow 6" round in place of the test pipe because I couldn't deal with it as a daily driver anyway more.

Although I will say it sounds great under hard accelleration.

I want a turbo.

The cat reduces a lot of the resonance. The test pipe I welded (using standard fence post - i think it was like 2 3/4 inch) sounded great in the top end. Sold it to Joseph and he sold it to someone else. Wish I still had it. Anyways, I'll be welding in some fence post over summer - mainly for weight savings. I paid ~ 8 bucks for my pipe from Home Depot.

Just get a flo-pro v-force muffler welded to the stock exhaust. I'm not biased, but I have yet to hear a better sounding exhaust - 944 and 951 alike!
