if you're going to turbo the car don't sweat it that much, turbo muffles the exhaust sound considerably. Depends on personal preferance of course....
i like my cars loud, especially VR6 VW's

yeah. i like my car loud too.
I dont want a muffler that muffles so much as it gets rid of those pinging noises.

I have a straight pipe and like the sound. However, I'm going back to a factory cat since I'm upgrading my car to have a megaphone on the back of it....and just a cat

Dunno what the heck is on my 86 951, but it is custom. Cat is missing, the wastegate tie in is before the thing seen in the picture, where as the tie in is usually after the cat. May be a resonator, it is about half as long as the stock cat, who knows. Maybe i will toss it on the lift and take better picture of it. Then on the dyno to see what it does.

I HATE test pipe noise- even on turbos... Just begging for attention from F&F types, cops, etc... Mine lasted all of about 4 weeks before I did the resonator... neighbors could hear me coming, etc.... was redneck as hell.... loud makes cars sound like they're straining, like something's about to give.... Nothing like a 540i @ 120-130- quieter than a stock 951 at idle... smooth, seemingly EFFORTLESS speed- Too bad BMW can't make serious cars w/OUT BS (rain sensors, reverse sensors, right & left ******** air bags, video cameras to watch the center line for some lazy-***, navigation, electronic this & that, etc...) & drop 500lbs or so from their cars- could still be quiet, yet purposeful... loud types seem to make more noise than progress- I ran against a WRX the other day w/some aftermarket coffe-can... I took him by 2 or 3 car lengths during our 6 or 7 second sprint, but, I could hear his car over mine the whole way, &, mine's loud as-is...

But, to each his own, &, I agree that turbo's DO muffle a little, but, it's more a change in pitch- if you check magazine tests from the day, you'll see that the dif b/t 944 turbo & NA is less than 2dB's all the way up.... it's something, but, not much... Not to mention the fact that our beloved turbos often have cracks in the manifolds due to the excess heat, which often causes more noise (do NA's do this?).... Oh yeah, noise is also one more thing to get your *** pulled over for... "look at me, I need a ticket for something.... pull me over & find something wrong w/me & my car...." I like moving under the radar, personally, but, again, to each his own.... Oh, one last point- lot's of this could depend on the state of tune of the particular car, plus, the specific brand of test pipe, muffler, state of tune of the muffler, size, etc, etc, etc... I've been told that Jet-hot coating (HPC?) can really help quieten & smooth things out, plus, help the flow of the exhaust parts, adding power.... not sure if this is true, but, might be worth experimenting with... anyone try this on any exhaust parts?

VR6 VW's....? DAMN! The only cars louder than that (from the factory) were the G-60s.....

I have a custom 2.5" exhaust on my car. I don't have a test pipe but I have a high flow cat on there and its loud. I have a Magnaflow race muffler. It is the oval shape, but is the straight through design. You can hear my car inside of a house a block away. I am thinking about putting a resonator on my exhaust. I like the sound of the car with no exhaust at all on it just the header. It sounds like a racecar. With my exhaust though it sounds like there is killer bees coming out of my exhaust at above 4000 rpm's.

hmm...my old 924 was stock resonator and gutted cat to a glass pack muffler. VERY loud and DEEP sound, but not buzzy at all. I liked the sound compared to the way it sounded before with a VERY plugged cat. However, the car seemed very weak at lower rpms, but surpisingly fast at higher rpms (compared to my second 924). I guess this is the effect of less back pressure?

Funny you say that- I seem to remember some tests done on some civics or Accords a long time ago- w/freer flowing mufflers- they did lose some TQ only to gain a little higher end HP, so, that makes sense.... it all depends on specific applications... that does sound like a good general rule though...

robby, there is no way I am going to notice a little coating on the exhaust manifold only.
I think its more to keep temps down and look pretty than for performance. (unless its a turbo...it keeps the heat that comes out of the exhaust IN the exhaust and not seeping out everywhere)

VR6's, with the right exhaust modifications, sound the best next to the new 996's in my opinion
