Default I might have another feature I wasn't aware of!

I had my 951's center console pulled apart for the first time today doing some stereo wiring (I've gone to a six-speaker all-Blaupunkt system with subwoofer ). Pics are forthcoming. Sounds great! Anyway while I did, I noticed under the console are harnesses numbered 1-4 with 1, 2, and 3 going to switches (sunroof control, mirror switchover, and rear wiper respectively). What does #4 go to? Do I have the car wired up for some other feature I'm not aware of that I just need a switch for? I believe there were four wires going to the harness (standard six-socket harness, two of 'em were blanks) - one grey, one brown, one brown w/ green and one yellow wire. Thanks all!

Number 4 should be the stereo fade control. Moves the sound from the rear speakers to the front and vice versa. Not sure why they put it in that spot. I never use mine.

Isn't #4 for the central locking button?
I remember I had one extra harness sticking out down there too, but I'm pretty sure it was for the rear wiper switch that the PO deleted.

I didn't even realize I had that! I do have the stereo fader control but the new stereo has built-in fader so I've bypassed it and I'll just end up putting a blank there once I get around to ordering one. Hmm. Central locking? I know nothing about this system - is it like power locks? I didn't think I had those.

Yeah it is a power lock button. You press it and it locks the doors and a little red light comes on. Press it again, unlocks the doors, little red light goes out.

All the cars have the same harness. Cars without a power passenger seat still have an electrical harness under the passenger seat. Because you have the harness doesn't mean you can just wire up the switch. For the central locking you need the lock acutators, etc.

Ahh okay. I'll look for a car being parted out or something. I did notice the extra harness under the pax seat.

There's also an extra harness I observed under the dash near the cruise control ECU but it isn't one of the two that connects to that - anyone know what that one's for?

Jeff,
Definitely the central locking harness. It's in my car too. The mating connector is under the steering column where the control unit would go. Then there would be an alarm unit under the passenger footwell I believe. Plus, actuators would need to be added in the doors if you wanted to retrofit. The wiring harness for the door actuators was NOT in my car. Too much work to get power door locks (without keyless entry or alarm I might add).

So I personally went the route of adding an inexpensive alarm with keyless entry. Adding newer style actuators in the doors was relatively easy. I have more info if you are interested. Howard

Yea if you have info. on it. I think it's pretty outrageous that these cars even had that as an option in 1986. Crazy how ahead of their time these things were. . .

Anyway, yea. I think the other harness I found under the steering column by the cruise ECU must be the one you mention. No problems there. So I'd need the computer and two actuators in the doors, the switch and the little LED light for the center console, right? Probably not that bad. I could probably pick up all that stuff off of parts cars.

1986 wasn't that far back for technology.

My 1985 Sirrocco had central locking for everything. You locked the drivers door with key, both doors, hatch and gas door all locked. Turned the key back, everything unlocked. I thought VW was smart on that one.

Howard, perhaps you could post up about your Power lock/keyless install. I would suspect that a lot of people (including myself) would be interested in hearing about it.

No reason you couldn't go with the original components.

A modern aftermarket kit, however, would give you the same functionality but also keyless transmitters with rear hatch open by remote, starter disable, shock sensor, lock/unlock chirps, dome light for 30 sec, etc: see http://www.autotoys.com/x/cust/produ...9&cat=0&page=1 as a possible kit. (no personal experience with this vendor). I used a Code Alarm CSI300 for $50 plus 2 actuators/extra relays at about $30 - but Circuit City no longer carries the CSI300, hence the link to Autotoys kit.

For a good write up of adding actuators in the doors: see this link:
https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...wer+door+locks
The 1986 install was identical. You would need the 2 relays shown, but instead of the 2 push buttons, I used a SPDT rocker switch at the console switchbank to give it the OEM look.
