Lightbulb 944 Engine Conversions

hi, i was wondering if anyone knows of a cheap engine conversion from my 4 cylinder engine to a V6 or V8. I am only 17, but have always loved cars, and i must say, being 17 means that i dont have all that much cash, specially because im going to college less than a year from now. So if anyone knows anything, please email me at payamheiraty@yahoo.com, or just reply to this post. I really want to make my 944 fast without spending a lot of money. i also dont care if i have to use like non-porsche parts either. please respond back, thanks

If you don't have much money it is IMPOSSIBLE, there is a company that makes v8 swap kits for LS1 motors to go into 944's but it is going to cost you. search for Renegade Hybrids.
Welcome to rennlist, lets here more about your car...

V8 swaps to LS1 engines cost over $8,000 if you do them correctly. A turbo engine swap would be cheaper, but still expensive.

You should really post a budget with a post like this. You wouldn't be the first 17 year old college student I ran into that thought $10,000 wasn't "a lot of money" to spend in mods on their cars.

Bottom line, cheap go fast = Honda
Kepping Porsche running = 2nd part time job just to pay for basic maintinence
Porsche go fast = 2nd mortgage
Porsche go really fast = soul to the devil

Pick one.

i agree with hacker porshgeraeger....but 350s, and 302s will go faster for even cheaper than a honda. get a muscle car instead of a honda.

For low budget swaps, check out Grassroots Motorsports Magazine. Those guys do a lot of swaps and you will get an idea as to what you are up against. The key seems to be to know someone in the towing and recovery business who will give you cars for next to nothing, and to be a great wrench/tuner/welder and fabricator. It looks like a bunch of fun if you have the time and the space. One important thing is to get the whole donor car and part out the stuff you don't need later. But you really need to be good at that stuff, or have bags of money. Preferably both.

maybe a just-turned 18 kid can shed some light on this *cough* me *cough*

getting a 944 to go fast takes LOTS of moolah. i spent a buttload rebuilding my 89 2.7 L engine this past summer. right now i'm in the process of acquiring a 951 engine with all the related parts, tranny, etc, and that too is costing a buttload. basically, right now i say save up your money for a year or two, wait until you're firmly planted in the college life, and then decide if you have the time and money to do something big such an engine swap. to tell you the truth, since you ARE on a budget, you might want to sell the 944 and get a 951. people don't flame me for saying that...i am the living example of not doing that since i am currently in the process of a 951 conversion, but since he's on a small budget, this would be best. good luck with the decision.

if you performed all the maintainence that most 944's need when you buy them, it'll probably feel like a new car after that.

944cs - Mine sure does!
As an 18 year old, whose parents never paid for any of his car stuff, I know that these cars are EXPENSIVE. Practically every dime I have earned has gone into my car... but it pays off I think

and i must say, being 17 means that i dont have all that much cash,
There are no cheap swaps, this isnt a Civic. I mean this as nicely as possible, if you dont have much cash sell now and buy something else. You will have more fun in the long run. An installed clutch on a 944 will cost more than an engine for a Civic.

Well..maybe not on average..but in reality..$10,000 is NOT alot of money to spend on modifying a car, lol.
You can spend more than HALF of that on just wheels and tires, and I am not 17 years old either.
Hell, one of our clients/ Friend Also ,just spent $8,000 in a matter of a month and a half modifying, his nissan 350z,which I might add is an amazing car,and being new makes it even better.

But back to the topic,You can do a v6- v8 swap into a 944 relatively easy,atleast...its pretty common and has been done more than once,(Renegade being experts at it check out their site )
but expect to spend a good amount of money in the car, over and over..and over again. If you cant do the work your self, expect to put even more.

Considering you are in college, and only 17 it is something that is more than likely out of your reach to do at once, but if you are really bent, save up, buy a broken down 944,or 944 Turbo, and tuck away a certain amount each month and do it piece by piece..just DONT use credit, trust me.

And a FAST car will not come without alot of money and time,Fast is based on opinion I guess, but 300-400 HP isnt FAST for me,I mean..it is ive owned, been in and driven several 300-400hp cars,fun.. but why live with 300 when you can go for 500 or 700 hp ?

Have fun, take your time, plan everything out ( conversion or not ) and drive safe,do your research and Forget any negative thoughts, and who says what,If it makes you happy go for it.
