most weight saved on deletes
hey everyone..
I've been fantasizing about how I would spend money on my car...since I am not in a position to do any big spending for a while..i was thinking in terms of weight savings...
how much total weight do you think or know, one can save by deleting all the electric motors, A/C, etc...and switching some components...rims and tires aren't eaxctly on my cheap list of fixes...but I am curious to know...
the replies should be fun reading.....
thanks

hmm, since i have the same car....this should be interesting. my list of weight savings goes like so:
a/c delete - 40+ lbs
cruise control delete - 5 lbs
wiper fluid reservoir removal - 1 lb
stereo and speaker removal - 8-10 lbs
rear wiper delete - 4-5 lbs
sound mats removed - 25-30 lbs
no floormats (those things are heavy!) - 10-15 lbs
rear seatback removed - 20 lbs
spare tire and jack removed - 35 lbs
sparco sprint front driver seat - 30 lbs
various interior panels (sunroof liner, sun visors, map holders) - 3-5 lbs
EDIT - i forgot - manual sunroof. removed the motor - 10 lbs
total weight savings so far - about 175 - 185 lbs.
that's all i've done so far. i have a turbo front bumper cover waiting to be installed and eventually i would like to replace the heavy rear bumper with a lightweight fiberglass euro replica or something like that.
other options include manual steering, manual windows, manual mirrors (although the weight savings to effort ratio diminishes quite a bit for these items)

sound mats eh...that's a significant savings in weight.....I was thinking I could delete the AC and would like a better lighter seat...and passanger side too...rear seats would be cool since i never use them...that right there is 100 pounds...!! 150 would pretty fat I suppose...is there a way to convert that intop horses...?

I started trimming the fat off my "S" tonight. I am selling the carpet bits to a friend who needs them. Since I don't even like cruise controls, that will go, don't even know if it works. Since the AC doesn't work anyway, that is going. I wanted to fab up some interior door panels like the ones in the 911 RS, they are real simple - the door latch is a loop strap, super lightweight and look nice.

you could easily lose 50-60 lbs in two lightweight front seats and another 20 by removing the rear seatback. take out the a/c and that's over 100 pounds right there.
i don't know if this is accurate, but i've heard people say losing 100 pounds is roughly equivalent to gaining 0.1 sec in the 0-60 gallop. and don't forget that added handling and braking benefits.

I would probably be the fattest SOB I know if it weren't for my metabolism...I'm a terrible soda-holic. Somehow I still only weigh in at 150?! Coke and V-Coke, specifically. And cookies...mmm, cookies...I hope this doesn't catch up with me 10 years from now!

Hi Guys..
Im in the midst of a weight saving program to turn my S2 in to a tracksl4g. I have binned the rear seats and the rear carpets (the heaviest one was the boot carpet!! ) I have reworked my door acrds in ABS plastic.. ( I will post some pics later ) I kept the electric windows ( for now ) but ditched the front speakers.
I am getting Carbon Fibre seats and alloy mounts which should wiegh 10kgs each as appose to the electrics I took out which weight nearly as much as I do each!!.
I have fitted a cage which takes the weight up again but adds a lot of stiffness to the car.
Next thing to come out is the sunroof motor when i glue the roof in.
The rear glass is the big thing to lose.. it weighs nealry 80Kg and can be replaced with a lexan unit. I have been told though that if you do this then the boot lid does not close on the latches anymore and there is a risk of exhaust fumes entering the cabin so im holding off on that one for now.
Oh yeah and I've got a GRP bonnet on order

I am keeping mine a street car but I am lightening it by removing the rear seat and rear carpets. I will replece them with light weight carpet. I also removed the rear bumper pads. I took out 10lbs of extra audio stuff that the P.O. put in.

I pulled the passenger and drivers windows (with the electric motors) and the rubber bumpers (front and back) yesterday. I should be around 2500lbs, of course, my car isn't daily driver friendly
