I just removed the K&N filter in my car, I don't understand why people replace working filters with crap like that.

I read a magazine test where air filters were compared and they found that a brand new K&N filter let more air in that stock for about two hours of use while the stock filters did the same work during the whole test.

Yeah, I use a K&N in the stock air box now. It gets VERY dirty and I clean it throroughly after every event.

The other idea I had was to run a large tube from the stock box to the fender well. A friend of mine did this, and insulated the entire air box and tube with hvac insulation.

I like the sound, so does my mom in her car. I've never had to clean hers in the last year or so, I've had to clean mine twice in the last 36K miles. No noticable difference other than sound and I like it, she stays. I'll get a pic of the 954 one, it's like the one Wes has, but I ran a 3" tube to place it next to the coil on the passenger side.

Top Gear Tip of the Day : AVOID

NA cars lose about 10 foot pounds torque and 2-4 HP midrange. Don't believe me? look up the archives in pelican titled "cold air intake" I used to post as EuroSpec944.

So unless I go with a nice MAF system I should keep my stock airbox.. (Takes Notes)

Sorry guys but no dirt is getting into my engine.....You can see the Piping, you can see the top of the Acrylic box I made, But what you dont see is, underneath the car there is a 2 foot wide, custom made aluminum scoop, used to grab or draw the air to the box, The scoop is connected to a 3" tube which then feeds the air the enclosed cone filter.. There is also an inline AEM intake screen filter....Plus if the pollen count is even to high that day..I will take the golf or the truck anyways....

I'm getting wary of K&N filters as a whole. I've seen some filtration data from actual lab testing on K&N filters, it's scary! It did show that they had lower restriction than the other widely available replacement filters, but they get this lower restriction at the sacrifice of filtration. Is 1-2 hp (if that) really worth letting in twice to three times the dust of a regular aftermarket filter? The most engine wear (for rings and main bearings) is caused by dust that is 0-10 microns diameter. On this size of dust, the K&N filter was worse than all but one of those tested.

K&N has an outstanding image in the market. I probably won't make many friends claiming they're "bad". Lets put it this way. I'm buying a new "boring" filter to replace the K&N I have on my car right now.

You guys are just making too much of this.
Just get a filter for your filter...then wrap your car in tac cloth and drive happy
Something to note here of course is that rare is it that we are the original owners of these cars and who knows(regardless of previous paperwork) what conditions our cars have been run on. You can run a K&N or stock all you want, that does not mean that the previous owner kept up on filter maintenance. So unless you did a full rebuild-Goodluck...and even then
-have you checked your whole induction sytem for being sealed?

(There are plenty of areas that wear or don't seal 100% behind the filter to suck in un-filtered air/debris.)

Plus(for the owners with MAF or the likes) I would be more worried about junk getting down in my timing belt cover(even with rubber cap), and FUBARing the works!

Or just drive and be deligent about maintenance and enjoy owning one of the most amazing car lines out there.

I bought one from EVO for my S2 and had the nose panel vented (the avatar doesn't reflect that). Cold air = air coming from in front of the radiator right... If so the evo w/a K&N in a vented nose is the best (and should be an option for both S2's and NA's since they don't have I/C).
