Default Can I get a CLEAR answer about tranny fluid. PLEASE

I have searched, and spent probably an hour reading threads where there has been MUCH discussion about transmission fluid. Whats good, what isnt, and what to use.
After reading all this I am even more confused than when I started, so ic alled the dealer. The service adviser I spoke to had to do some searching also because I was on hold for 15 minutes. Then he came back and said that I needed a special tranny fluid that they only sell when they service the tranny. it cannot be bought in quarts, liters, or gallons.
SO, I went to the autoparts store and they said I culd use anything....
I have a 1987 Porsche 944S with a 5 speed tranny. Would someone please tell me what tranny fluid I need and how much of it I need.
Thank you VERY much,
Terry

Ditto on the Redline MT-90. Draining the old Swepco out was a very stinky venture...what's with that stuff anyway?

I dig Redline MT-90 also. great stuff...gear oil smells bad anyway...this stuff is no exception, but you can shift incredibly well afterward...infact, it's about time for a change.... I try to do it once a year to keep my synchros happy.

I've heard good things about Redline, but I'll be going with Amsoil personally.

Why the 90 weight? The '88 owner's manual spec's 80 weight. My transaxle is very stiff-shifting with 80W-90 (dino) until it warms up (can take a while) and I would think a lighter gear oil would help with this.

thanks,
-David

They don't make redline in a lighter fluid, this stuff when it's REALLY cold makes it difficult to shift into second, but it warms up quickly.

What is your location?

If temps are regularly below freezing in your area:
1L Redline Lightweight Shockproof
mix with
1.5L Redline 75W90NS to fill.

If temps are usually above freezing in your area:
1L Redline Heavy Shockproof
mix with
1.5L Redline 75W90NS to fill.

Don't run Swepco, it's been inferior every time I've used it or seen it used.

I am in San Diego, CA (definately above freezing!) and found the redline gear oil at San Diego Motorsports for $7.95 a quart. I will head down in the am and buy 3 quarts...
Thanks everyone, and my tranny thanks you too!

Hey - is it alright to use Redline MTF, or is MT-90 better? I can pick up the MTF locally.

Not too sure about the MTF. May stand for "friction modified" which would be a no no unles you have a limited slip differential. Someone with more knowledge of the REDLINE products should veryify that, however.

Do some trannies use three quarts? Mine uses two. Or is the third quart for topping of?

Take the time to order the proper fluid, don't substitute - you change once a year at most, why compromise now over waiting another week to order the right fluid?

I've never had a tranny take only 2 quarts, but I fill to the bottom of the fill plug (fill until it drips out). I don't fill to 6mm below the plug like the manual says.

If you only have one side jacked up as you put the fluid in and you wait till it leaks out, you are overfilling significantly. Something to keep in mind...
