Cheapest source for NEW waterpump?
Most of you have done a waterpump replacement before, and for those who have bought new,
Where is the cheapest place to buy a NEW (not rebuilt) water pump?
That's the gift I asked for from my dad for christmas, but I'd like to save him a little cash.
Is there anywhere that sells it for less than paragon ($233)?

Vertex,
But make sure you get an updated pump. They sold me an old (they're not supposed to be available any longer) style pump and I didn't catch it until I checked the part # several months later. IIRC, the pumps are $190. I believe Europroducts.net used to beat this price as well... but again, make sure you're careful in checking out the end product.
I had specifically requested the late-style pump the first time from Vertex.

While I've got this thread going, I know I need the waterpump gasket, but,
How many bolts/washers should I buy?
And, do i need the waterpump O ring, thermostat base seal, and "block off plate"?

I always go to Zims, they don't list a new pump on their web page, so give them a shout. Although they seem to have the best price on a rebuilt pump.
Zims has the 29 piece hardware kit for the water pump, there's a lot of washers and bolts, couldn't tell you the exact numbers of each.
The block off plate kit will inclide 2 bolts, plate, o-ring.

I did the Zims thing too but for a rebuilt pump (not a new one). Same day shipping $86.00. Personally I'm doubtful that a new one is THAT much better than a rebuilt but everyone has a preferences on these things - and it IS a lot of work to change a pump.
I didn't go for thier stud kit, the pieces didn't appear to have any sort of corrosion control treatment and I'm wary too that the studs were not above what you would get at the hardware store. Good studs should be hardened....;] Bruce

If you buy a turbo water pump, you need the block off plate kit.
You can use a non-turbo pump, that is, if you can find one.
I would reccomend going with a pump that has the deflector bar, which means, if you don't already have one on your water pump, you also need the deflector bar kit. Between the block off plate kit, and deflector bar kit, you should expect to pay around $20.
I just got off the phone with Zims for something else, but I asked about a new 951 style water pump, was quoted $238.
Here's a picture of the hardware kit, hopefully this answers your question =), and to give credit where credit is due, this picture is courtesy of Zims.

"Bruce, whats the best source for a quality replacement hardware kit? I dont want to use cheap ones and have to replace them."
PK...I was hoping you guys would tell me. I only learned about the coated ones from a friend who emailed in some tips. I don't know who sells them, maybe Porsche. I'm thinking the coating might be zinc-chromate, at least dark-green is what has been discribed to me; and hardened to grade 8.

When I changed waterpumps on both our 944s (both early style NAs), I needed the "thin style" thermostat O-ring, both times. The first time, I was given a "thick style" O-ring with the thermostat from the parts place, and I didn't know about the thin one, so I tried to shove it in and I ended up breaking the circlip. When I went to order a new circlip, I found out there is a thin O-ring. I used NA waterpumps, early style on mine and guard-rail style on my mom's, and both needed the thin O-ring. I think the turbo waterpump probably needs the thick one. Or its just a random thing and I happened to get then thin O-ring type of waterpumps both times. Both mine were rebuilt ones.
To sum up what I'm saying, if you get a NA waterpump, I suggest getting the thin O-ring. If you end up needing a thick one, I'll mail you mine, I don't need it. Don't break the circlip, it costs more than it should and it's just a waste of time to wait for a new one...
