ilikemy944 - look more closely I think those are just decals, you can see them better on the white car in the wreck.
From '86 to at least '89 is what I can tell from some research. I found some more factory interior shots. Not sure how much of this was actually done by porsche, but if you will notice it has the brake balance controller, hmmm.... This is interesting stuff

Brad, if you look REALLY close, those are some sort of sponsor logo's on the headlight buckets. Although they DO look like it, I cannot imagine them being some sort of NASCAR-esque headlight stickers.
Carl, I hear ya, man. Excellence's article was title "Bareknuckle Brawlers"; suggesting that drivers choked the living SNOT out of the cars and drove them with VERY little regard for gentlemenly tactics. One of the former Canadian Cup racers they quoted (maybe David Empringham) said the series was great for honing one's race craft. Yeah, race craft. THAT'S the ticket. That being said, I'd say it's a safe bet that the current cars aren't being flogged to death by their current owners. It makes sense that a lot of the factory series cars would have been "put right" and at the least, not sent out to retirement as beater track-dogs.
Sean's car was actually one of the first seven Turbo Cup test mules that ran in the Escort Endurance Challenge. He found it with some spares (although not nearly as many as some Cup car owners have) and complete, even though it's pretty rough and in need of attention. He paid TWO grand for it, and while it needs some work, I'd bet you could do it properly for 10-15 large. Probably not a show-room queen for that cash, nor would EVERYTHING be replaced or refurbed, but it wouldn't look like a Krylon, backyard redneck job, either.
Now, will YOU or I fall into a deal like that ever? I highly doubt it. Most of the Canadian cars are present and accounted for, as I'm sure the Euro and S. Africa cars are as well. Sean's car is one of SEVEN sold by PMNA, so the chance of finding his car's siblings is pretty slim. Or is it??? Who cares? The way I see it, you could easily spend $50-70 large on a pimp-daddy 993 Turbo or a billy-badass 964 track car or an old RSR clone or whatever. Or you could buy a Turbo Cup car (the FIRST Cup car series Porsche ever ran, by the way!) and be DONE with it. A new cup car owner said he would take an offer for his car that would be well under that number I just mentioned.
Which is what amazes me even today is that there were less of these cars made than the immortal Carrera RS. The balance of a 944 is only enhanced by the lighter weight and the suspension mods, and the cars are from the FIRST ever Cup series Porsche ran. And still there's a 911 or some damn Boxster gracing the cover of Excellence every month. Which might not be a bad thing for a guy who's got his heart set on a 944. They remain somewhat collectable but never truly unobtainable (like a Carrera RS is) for a working stiff like me.

I have an entire set of Rothmans Turbo Cup car decals (from the Canadian TurboCup series), do you have access to a large-scale scanner?
(I may put them on the car some day after paint)

Taylor, excellent points, I hope to find one of the remaining 6 cup cars hiding out there somewhere! I know it will never happen though, but its a wonderful dream to have. 2 grand is AMAZING though! I cannot beleive that! I mean the wheels are worth that much easy.
Tifo, I am working with a guy who is going to help me re-create the other version decals for the cup cars, Dunlop, Shell, Recaro ( in the rear quarters) etc. Awesome guy, he should be putting some packages together to sell to others if i can convince him there is a really good market for it.
I'll keep you in mind, I'd love to have those scanned into something like an illustrator document, that way we could reproduce them cheaply and easily, when needed.
I'll show my setup off when I get it all done, hopefully in the next couple of months!

OK, let me know.
I now have 4 944 cup DVD's. 1 of the Canadian 86' N/A series, and 3 of the Turbo Cup series from different years/venues in Europe. They drove the snot outta those cars. There were wrecks a-p-lenty!Some great racing!
Don't forget to add the Golf/Rabbit mirrors to your car to make it look authentic.

When is the next time you will be up in the Dayton area? I can get you a firsthand look at a real cup car, let me know.
Were you looking at Seb's site? www.asarus.com ?
I have a slew of 944cup photos, but they are not on the computer that I am on right now.

This car was for sale a year ago (click here) , I don't know if he sold it or not, but the price is a little to high IMO.
But still nice ride.
And there is a cup car hood for sale (Here) .
