What shocks / suspension for 924S ?

Hi,
Just plan to upgrade suspension in my 924s. Got 944's thick front and rear sway bars. Now need shocks. There are Koni shocks avialble - red and yellows (adjustable). Could You describe the red/yellow difference form Your experience ? I do not plan to use the car on the track (races) - just like an agressive driving on the street form time to time. I can also buy H&R complete struts and springs (picture). What is Your advise ?

Tom....I understand you wish for a better suspension and for the fact that you are not going to track the car I would use the money for other wishes/concerns. The stock suspension is a really good set up as is. No sense spending the kind of money you will spend for a suspension that you will never get full use of.
Koni Yellows and Reds.....Reds are "sport shocks" and are non adjustable. Used for the purpose you intend to use the car for.......Yellows are adjustable and used both on street and track cars. A more aggressive strut. Used mostly on DE/Daily and race cars.
Sway bars are a good upgrade without going all out and serve you well on the street.
You can be very aggressive with the stock suspension as is so start with good struts and sway bars. A good set of bushings by itself is a major improvement to handling.

All I did on mine was Koni yellows, and it handles great, It can be too stiff for the street, if you crank them all the way up to full stiff (rebound). But If you like your ride very stable, and you want to feel the road that is definately the way to go. Paragon Products has some of the best prices, if I remember from when I was shoping

On my 924S, I've got Koni Yellows all the way around, I lowered it without re-indexing the torsion bars in the rear, and with 220# weltmeister springs in the front. I also tossed in all new bushings on the sway bars and A-arms. Finally, I put in a 24mm front sway bar in place of the 19mm it came with, and a 19 mm 968 M030 rear sway bar in place of none. it was a HUGE difference, and it cost about $1,000.00, but I think it was WELL worth the price... Also, for those who think I paid too much, those are factory sways from Porsche, bought new thru the dealership, along with the drop links, and all the bushings.

Also, if you're not planning on going to the track with it, I'd say just toss on some new shocks like KYB or the Koni reds. My setup was mostly for auto racing, street driving and autocrossing...

1. Stock suspension performance.
Well, I know stock is OK., but for me it's just to soft - maybe 944s are stiffer. Car floats on corners and does kangaroo jumps during gear changes (especially 1->2 and doesn't matter how quick I am). Maybe my shocks are gone, but test machine said 90% OK. Here in Poland we have fatal road conditions - lots of bumps, dents, waves etc. When running smooth highways, it's OK., but in the town I need more rigidness. I have recently the opportunity to drive Subaru Impreza WRX (stock, no upgrades) and I was amazed by it's suspension. The impression of integration between driver and the car was just great - far far away from that my 924s offers.
2. My web page.
It has been deleted by ISP. I will have to find some nicer place for my web page. Recently I replaced engine mounts (what a difference !). It was 2 hours of labor, I did it alone. I reviewed many posts with different approach to do it - from my experience: it is definitely not necessary to remove front control arms nor steering rack/rods.
Now prices. Here in Poland: New set of Koni yellows: $600. I can get H&R suspension with height adjustment (struts, shocks, springs) for around $500.

Tom....924S/944 same suspension except for the A arms...steel vs. aluminum. Car floats.....sway bars will help more for this. Worn bushings I can't stress enough if never replaced and a huge improvment when new.
Invest in a good sway bar set up from Turbo bars to M030 968 bars first then see how it drives. Still too soft then go with a heavier spring rate and your choice of struts. Struts alone are not the solution.
I am trying to save you money by small cheaper upgrades. You can get the ride you seek without over spending/overkill.....![Wink](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
We can get Koni Yellows here for 160 usd each, perhaps you could buy them here? And your 924S has a rebuildable strut housing.

Better consider and consult before spend money ! That's why I started this thread. I know all technical details of my car (use PET and factory manuals). I service the car myself since I bought it in 1995 (well, replacing the clutch was hardest one). I replaced all front bushings and also front control arms (steel). I used factory spares (no plastics). An You - are You running plastics ?
And cangaroo jumps - don't think swaybars could help here. Only shocks and/or springs, maybe torsion bars.

Spherical and Delrin race bushings on my car. I did not understand your meaning of "Kangaroo jump"? I take this as the car is " jerking" could the new clutch be the reason?

I've got yellow Konis all around with Turbo S bars, 350 lbs. progrssive rate front springs and Turbo S torsen bars out back. The stock camber plates were replaced with solid steel ones, big "Feel" change with those. I removed the power steering also, for the feel thing again and had the car lowered and aligned with a compitition alignment, more rear camber!

Kangaroo jump: When I release the clutch on first gear while pushing acc pedal to the floor the car accelerates nicely but front goes up to much while rear of the car just dives down. When I quickly shift to the 2nd on only half clutch and acc pedal sill on the floor the acceleration is still nice but front of the car does down/up sequence not matter how quick I am with the gear change. No jerking - just few meters of the rubber from my tires on the road. Same on 2->3 shift. The suspension is too soft for max acceleration. This "vertical" effect makes me unhappy - want it to be "horizontal" one like in WRC cars. It should be felt like drag forward not down then up float (kangaroo jump). Or maybe I expect too much from my 924s.
