Hi all,
I've had my 1990 944 S2 for over 8 years now and has over 175,000 kms (105,000 mls) and think it must need new shocks (at least), every other car I've owned I've replaced shocks about every 50-60k kms, my local Porsche dealer (where the car is serviced) tells me that they're fine, but they have never been replaced. The dealer has the complete history of the car on their data base, and it shows that not only have the shocks never been replaced but neither has the clutch...is this really uncommon for them to have such longevity??
If I did replace the shocks am I better off going with original equipment or going for Koni yellows (I've noticed that they seem to be a popular replacement). And should I look at maybe doing some further suspension mods??? It currently has 17' 968 cup wheels and tyres.

Not sure about the longevity of shocks if it is miles or time that kills them. I would tell you if they are still performing, then there should be no need to change.
I will say that my S2 had it's clutch replaced last summer @ 152K miles. I have had the car for 8 years also and I am the 3rd owner as far as I know. The clutch that came out was a rubber centered one, so it could well have been the original, no real service records prior to my ownership @ 70K miles.
Cheers

depends on what your doing w/ the car...if your autoxing, i would maybe put some bigger front springs on like some weltmeister 200lb springs... Replace the sway bar bushings...konis are very nice...could upgrade to some mo30 swaybars but why unless your DE-ing the car.

Thanx guys,
I'm not tracking the car as yet, that may happen in the future...when I have more time!
I'm a fan of using original equipment... although, I know that you can save a lot of money using parts, I wouldn't mind putting a complete Mo30 suspension set-up on it one day. It's a great car and drives really well, I think it could handle a little better though!

Koni yellows are OE for your front strut assbys. I just converted a pair myself and I'm waiting for the H&R 250# springs.
I used the Paragon write up for the conversion and I expect to see a HUGE difference.

Thanx ibkevin..didn't realise that the konis were OE!!
The problem with suspension is that it can deteriate so slowly that you start to drive around the slight deficiancies, then one day you realise that your car is handling like a truck when a soccer mum in her SUV passes you around the outside of a roundabout when you think that your going reasonably quick!

944S2-
I have some mild stuff to the suspension done to my S2. I have some M474 Konis (factory sport option BEFORE the external adjustables were available) and the 968 MO30 sway bars front and rear. Also did the 968 castor block upgrade and have a strut bar from KLA industries, nothing real fancy though. I hope to put in some ext. adjustable Konis in the near future or perhaps get the Bilstein Escort Cup stuff from Paragon.
Just trying to save up for the splurge though it is hard to justify as the car does fine at AX and DE. The driver definitely limits the car at this moment, not the orther way around. If I could have one thing in the car right now it would be a LSD.
Have fun with your upgrades!

Thanks, she definitely looks better in pix than up close. Really...
I like the SS, though others may not. It was easy enough to install, the one I have is from Autothority and mounts on the tranny. The ones on the tranny can be adjusted for fore and aft throw as well as side to side. There are different models now that just change the shift lever height in the car and are even easier to install, though I do not think they can adjust the side to side throw.
Cheers,

I changed the shocks on my s2 at 155,000 miles, and the fronts were gone, the rear were ok, but i drive the car pretty hard, i upgraded to koni all the way around with the rear coil-over kit and front coil-over conversion kit from paragon, makes a huge difference.

I've got so many things that I'd like to do to mine...it's completely stock, appart from the 968 whls + tyres. I don't want to turn it into something that is tiresome to drive, just a little more exciting, those Subaru WRXs are annoyingly quick, although they don't seem to have the top end that the S2 does...I'd beat on in a traffic light grand prix, he has ahead until I grabbed third, then I slowly realed him in and overtook...a bit naughty I know, but that was a few years ago, when I was young an stupid.

Does anyone else with an S2 running the 17' cup whls with 225/45 fr 255/40 r had any issues with the steering...I've replaced the rack and 2 steering shafts as well as replaced a leaking power steering hose...maybe the larger whls & tyres are too much strain on the steering???
Any thoughts.......
