Default success.....no valve/piston interference!

For those who may be interested in following my rebuild, it's been slow-going (it seems) as I'm still waiting on some parts, but I also made some progress yesterday. The cam and crank installation and setting TDC seems to be remarkably simple, although time will tell how accurate it is. Basically, the cams were aligned using the lugs next to the sprocket. This sets them at close to TDC. Next, I installed the flywheel and bellhousing, then rotated the crank counterclockwise to TDC for cylinder 1, as shown by the OT mark in the bellhousing window. Finally, I installed the camshaft pulley. The marks were still on the pulley from the rotor, so installing the rotor in the right location seemed fairly simple. Finally, I set the pulley to exactly TDC and then installed the timing belt. So both the pistons and cams were in time and at TDC. Then I carefully rotated the engine around clockwise, listening for any metallic noises. All I heard was the pfft-pfft of valves opening and closing!! Sweet.

It seems like it all went very easily and almost too smoothly. All I need now is the clutch and to install the cam tower cover, then I can reinstall the engine.

I put some more pics up on my website for those interested. www.cardomain.com/memberpage/706257/6

make sure to crank it around a few times in the running direction of course and then check tdc again..just to be sure the belt slack is in the right spots.

Joseph,
That's exactly how I set mine up when I installed the head. Very straightforward and works like a charm. Runs great!
