Just a little detailing secret I just discovered - McGwire's Scratch-X product (though expensive) is INCREDIBLE!!! The stuff buffed out about 10 little spots that needed attention on my 951 today with just hand pressure. It doesn't "cut" the paint either like a rubbing compound. I wish I had before & after pictures - you wouldn't believe it! I swore a couple of those little nicks and scratches were there for good but there's no trace of them ever having been there now!

I totally endorse this product! It's amazing!

I've tried 3M rubbing compound, it works well also. My sunroof was sitting in the hatch and some how my toolbox went sliding accross it. There were some bad scratches in it, now you can barely see them though.

I might try that. I had delusions that it could get out the paint chips on the nose but they remain unfortunately. It did make it look a heck of a lot better though - although the chips are there still, a lot of the little ones did disappear. It looks a lot less pockmarked after going over it.

Now if it could only fix the paint on my n/a. . . I have one fender where the top coat is flaking off.

I tried five or six different polishing compounds on mine (it unfortunately sat outside for about a year) and did not have good results. I got the 3M perfect III iirc, big bottle, cost about $35 but nothing else works as good either by hand for scratches or machine to buff out the entire car.

Jeff: was there any prepwork required before applying the Scratch-X? or do you just clean the scratched area and apply? haven't tried any of those compounds, but could sure use them on a few spots if it works as well as you state! Thanks.... Chase

Just wash it thoroughly. I applied the McGwire's "three step" on top of it, but it takes a LONG time (since there are three steps)

I'm finishing up today - I got tired of waxing yesterday and only got about half the car done in about four hours worth of work. It does look a LOT better though. . .

This reminds me how much my front end looks like a Van Gogh painting--fine from 10 feet away, but a mess when close up! Damned rock chips!

I have both, use the 3M rubbing compound first, then follow with Meguiar's Scratch-X, then your preferred wax. The paint is deep and has such a great luster afterwards.

BTW, anyone ever used Scratch-X on the entire car??? I used it and followed up with wax, don't even ask me what the results were because the car had absolutely ZERO swirl marks and the paint depth just jumped out at me! The wax I use is Meguiar's Gold Class. I feel that this wax is truly under-estimated and for it's price, it produces near-Zymol results

Yea, their products are amazing. I'm not sure, but I think the three-step stuff I'm using is the same as the "gold class". The results are amazing. I didn't think the car could look that good! I'll post some pics if I'm not too lazy to finish it today (might be tomorrow).

hahaha, just don't ask me how long I take when I do a wax job that involves going over the car with Scratch-X before wax.

Damian - having seen the quality of the finish on some of the stuff you've posted, I'm curious - what do you use? I'd trust your judgement pretty well. I'm also curious because my detailer for the showroom does a pretty impressive job with a wheel and ardex products, but I'd like to get your feedback and maybe have him try it.
