I would dearly love to build a car like that. I may do it someday.

How could it possibly be lighter with a wider cylinder head, additional camshaft, more lifters, more valves, etc?

Excuse me, I meant to say the block is lighter.
From pg. 88 of Michael Cotton's 924 & 944 collectors guide (refering to the S2 block):
"The new cylinder block was actually 4.5kg (9.9lb) lighter than the one used for the Turbo, although stronger, with siamesed bores and 'closed deck' construction"
Regardless, 10 or 20 lbs. will not effect the front to rear balance by much. The amount of gas in the tank would make more of difference.

Thanks for the compliments, fellas! You guys are right, it is a 968 block (shortblock?) with an S2 head and S2 electronics, and a close ratio gearbox with a direct drive 5th gear. The car goes like stink. The handling is very good even with the Michelin all-seasons (car came with an extra set of 928 wheels with r-compounds that will make a huge improvement). I have not gotten it on the track but the former owner, Roger Zimmerman (who was on this board often I think) assures me handling is neutral and the car will hold its own with some pretty serious (and much more costly) machinery. Car also has Koni adjustable shocks so I think I could dial in some understeer pretty easily, which I'll probably do first time on track. Re: the weight, the car has lightweight Koenig race seats and a Autopower roll bar, and the a/c has been deleted. I suspect it is 50-60 lbs. less than stock on balance. Other mods include 944T sway bars, Paragon coilovers (rear), a big Earl's oil cooler with ss oil lines, strut tower brace, fiberglass nose panel, larger torison bar front, ss brake lines, and a lot of stuff I'm forgetting.

Re: the header panel - yeah, the color is off. It is really not as noticable in real life as in the pics - the light in the pics seems to emphasize it. The panel is a fiberglass piece - it has an opening that feeds the filter directly; I'm not sure if that is how the 944S2 had it from the factory??? I have the factory piece with the badge in my garage (PO gave it to me).

The only car that came with vents in the header panel is the 924 turbo, with the 4 slotted vents. That piece is a pretty common replacement for 951's and S2's...
Check out Perry's 951 below...i'm not sure which aftermarket company makes it though.
The problem is that the header panels on 951's and S2's are more curved to accomodate the turbo nose...it's not the same piece. I think a 931 header panel would be a better fit, or put a 931 NACA hood scoop over the filter.

However, since the filter is located in there, you probably won't be able to fit the stock, proper-shaped panel back on there, as it does not give enough clearance (thus the reason that 951 cars and S2 cars had the larger panel----to fit the intercooler for the 951 and the air cleaner for the S2).
If you went to a cone filter set-up in the engine bay (which may or may not be a good idea), you could put the proper fitting panel back on there.........
