What's it worth? Need help, advice
I've got an '86 NA 944. It's garnet red. It's got Koni yellows, the m030 sway bars, and 16" phone dials.
The interior was replaced in 1996 with a perfect interior from an '89. It's burgundy, too. The car now has a couple small cracks on the dash around the vents.
The seats are in good condition, and I just had the headliner replaced, as the old one was peeling away from the sunroof-hole gasket.
The head was rebuilt in '02, with all new idlers (I *knew* I was due for a TB); the AC was converted to R-134 around the same time (new compressor, exp valve, dryer, etc.) About 25k miles since then, so it's due in the next year or so.
New brakes and rotors on the rear this year.
Car was professionally repainted in 1996. Looks pretty good but with a few rock chips on the nose. Still nice and glossy.
I blew up a ring/pinion in 1996 or 1997, and the transaxle was rebuilt then, too, with a new clutch.
Has a 5-channel Sony x-plod amp with Denon 4x6s in the factory cutouts, plus surface mount tweeters on the A-pillars for better imaging with the sunroof out, with 2 8" Fosgate subs built into the spare tire well, with a Sony head unit and Denon 9-band EQ.
I've been asking $5,200 which I realize is probably too high. Have had some tire-kickers inquire/drive, etc. but the big detriment seems to be having 212k miles on the odometer.
I know that motors > 250k have been reported quite commonly, but I was wondering whether anyone could offer some advice or thoughts about what the car should be worth. I was hoping to get somewhere north of $4k, but didn't know whether this was realistic.
I hate to sell it lower than that, but I'm getting ready to SC my 928. I had thought about doing a Renegade conversion/turning it into a race car, but I figured I could buy an existing 951 or conversion where someone already took the depreciation hit for far less than I could recreate on my platform.
Open to suggestions...

212 K is not an issue to those who know these cars. She's got a real life left- even if retired to an auto-x or DE car. BUT you are approaching the end of known life. If you expect to get out of it what you have into it you are mistaken.
Brian- keep driving it unless you need to get rid of it. It'll never be concours, perhaps a great daily until something major goes- Enjoy!
My .02 is just that.

You could probably get what you are asking for if the car was in the midwest, but, alas, being in Kalifornia where 944's are said to grow on trees and thus cheaper than everywhere else..............$4K or so is probably about what you can expect. Sounds like a great car though!

I've owned the car since graduating college in 1991 and have all major service records; I will never get out of it even close to what's gone into it. I just see so many examples of $2k-$3k POSs and I know how much $$ it would take to bring a $2500 944 up to the level that mine's at (and not that mine is perfect by any stretch), that a $2k premium seems reasonable by comparison...
It still runs and drives great, and I think b/c I know the car so well that I can probably drive it faster than my 928 thru the twisties...I just never seem to drive it anymore.

Hold your price. Tifo is right. Go on Auto Trader .com (traderonline.com) and look in the regular (Auto trader, not collector trader) section, and do a search for 944s within a 300 mile radius of zip code 44444 (somewhere in Ohio). You'll see plenty of high mileage cars with asking prices like yours. Your being a long time owner with lots of service history is a plus. 212k is a pup.

I must be losing it. I agree with Tony.

Tifo is right, 944s grow on trees in california. You can pick one up for 1500-2000 and drive it daily...wont be the prettiest 944 youve seen though. Who cares about looks; who here can take their car out on a gravel road and not cringe?
