Now what!!!!!
Hey,
I am getting really pissed off with this car. I received a ticket due to the excessive noise from my exhaust. It has been broken at the y-pipe for over 9mos now. I get pulled over Oct 25th (month end mind you) and receive a $75 ticket for faulty exhaust. I have 30 days to get it fixed and they will drop it down to $9. So I have been in search for a replacement. I got one from Ian at 944Online. I drove over to his shop yesterday (a 4 hr drive) an picked one up. I installed it today, and made sure everything is tight. I finally fired her up and man she sounds Horrible !!!!. It is not from the ehaust but from the engine itself. Could it be that I messed up the internals while driving her without the exhaust repaired? Could the O2 sensor cause some of the problems?, I had to splice and connect the O2 sensor since the wire broke when the Y-pipe broke. Should I bite the bullet and have the shop check and see if something is wrong ?

how horrible is horrible? It should sound a lot less loud then before with out a broken exhaust. Do you have a microphone and a laptop? or a vid camera that you can load tot he computer? if you do you should get us a sound clip.

Sounds like a blown out gasket at manifold to engine, or the manifold itself is cracked open. You probably have the steel manifold, and this would be quite common AFAIK. I would try to find a set of cast iron manifolds from an "83, they are much, much more gooder. Re-welding steel manifold will work for a while........maybe. Good luck!

OK,
I will try and check the exhaust manifold to see if they are either loose or cracked. I will order new Gaskets and replace them just in case. I'll keep you guys up to date on the problem.

I remember when my friend with a V-8 Mustang asked me to drag. I told him he would win.He insisted, so I gave in. Next Friday we go to the drag strip, the night before I took off the headers so my exhaust sounded LOUD, lol. He "wasn't in the mood" to race that night....

Well,
I drove the car to work this morning (she's my daily driver) and it sounds like a loud tapping sound from the engine area. When I give it some gas it gets faster and louder. When she's Idle I can still hear the tapping but not so loud. When I get to a comfortable speed and just cruise(60 mph on the highway) leaving the accelerator still (not letting off and not giving it more gas), the noise disappears, but as soon as I need to pass someone and give it gas, the tapping comes back.
I ordered the gasket and will replace it on wednesday, since I have that day off since I have to work on Saturday.

One trick to track down an exhaust leak that usually works. At night when it is very dark out shine a flashlight, not on the exhaust areas but across the areas. The exhaust leak should show up as particles in the beam of light.
