Default Throttle Response Cam Is Great

After having it lying around for a year, I finally installed the throttle response cam that the previous owner bought. I didn't think it would make much difference, but boy, is it great. Much more responsive, no hesitation when you step on the accelerator. Even my wife, who doesn't notice anything about cars other than if they are "pretty", asked me why the 944 was more powerful. I know it is just an illusion and doesn't really increase power, but it is one of the best things I ever did to the car.

Why aren't those things available for 951s?

Cyrus, i remember reading somewhere that the 951 and S2 motors already have a circular throttle cam...though i dont remember if that is 100% true or not.

Just put your foot down a little further. Same thing.

I've had one for about 3 years..they are pretty good. Though I think to match the increased throttle response, it would be good to have a short shifter installed, which I plan to do at some point.

Exactly - why pay $100 for something that you can get the same effect on for nothing?

It is not the same thing in my opinion. The engine responds differently because the plate is opening incrementally more for the amount that you are pushing down the accelerator. The computer is reading a different amount of air for the amount of fuel. Maybe the last statement is wrong, but the previous is right, because you can only know this by putting one in and driving it. It is a more linear response, which is one of the things that a high horsepower engine does that is so cool. It is more like a racing setup, linear throttle response... I put one in a I like it too. The petal feels like it responds softly without it. And has a HARD response with it in. Definately a worthwhile upgrade.

Thanks

I remember after installing mine, I was like "WTF?!?!" as it makes a HUGE difference, and it took me a little to realize that I'd over-rev the engine when trying to start from a stop...

But then again, it makes it really fun telling the hotties that want to learn how to drive a stick that it's really touchy, they don't believe you and the engine Revs way quickly and scares them, then they refuse to drive it. worked for me...

it's not the same as jamming your foot down - i thought it was as I left my welt cam sitting on a shelf for 6 months - i just installed it last week and it is an excellent 30 dollar upgrade. IMO, the factory offset set-up is not the best.

Jamming you foot, all the time, is not natural. even when you jam it, the cam is still going through an indirect response - the one-to-one rotation of the cam is more responsive.

I was skeptical that I would notice the difference, but because it was so significant, and not the same as just "jamming your foot down", that is why I started this post. Don't knock it until you try it. Mine cam was given to me when I bought the car, so for $0, it is the best upgrade I have done.

It gives you the false impression of power when youre moving from a dead stop. I was overreving like mad after installation but then got used to it. Its an imporvement, but not worth the 25 bucks since you can make one with a dremel using your stock cam.

Why even spend money on buying one, I just cut one of my throttle cams, exact same thing, but i do agree it is a great upgrade, i can't drive a '44 without it!
