968, I believe we met a few years back on drive, you have a very low mileage 968 correct? If so, very nice car.

I to would like to know why everyone says the 968 is more refined? Are we refering to body work?? Are we refering to chasis?? At the end of the day the 968 is a 944 with new clothes, correct?

Default 968 vs 944

The 968 was to be the S3, therefore it was the next generation of 944 or a refinement. Take into consideration the variable timing improvement over the S2, 6sp transaxle, first car with projector fog lights, etc. its a step up. If its not an improvement, then why does everyone with a 944 want the door handles and mirrors!

For me, its the body lines.

Off line someone suggested that the 968 is not a refined 944...its a refined 924 and the 944 was just a step along the way.

Oh clearly the 968 benefits from tech advancements in some cases. However if we're just judging on form alone I think the 968 looks dull and boring from some angles compared to the 944 shape. It does look more modern granted. Also the fact that 944s can be bought so cheaply in the US that a lot of them wind up becoming really Ratty in condition doesn't help the overall perception. The 968 turbo RS does look good from a front 3/4 angle. The rear also work with the racebread spoiler. The side of a normal 968 looks too straight. Many people compare the 968 to the 993, but I think it actually looks a lot like the 996 from the side. All straight lines and an overhanging ***. The 944 by comparison has a snub and hip filled sexy rear. Even the 1/4 windows add to the curve on the 944. The concept of the sealed rear lights is more modern than the 944s. Not that this car is great from all angles or tastes but the attention to detail is great and the rear end differences I just mentioned seem to even up with this well made custom 1 off car.

Personally I hate when people do that. I understand they are trying to bring their 944 a few years forward in styling, but I say leave it as it was. The flag style mirrors and the phone dials are so 80s. Not dissing my brothers, just not my style.

Even if the 968 is a logical refinement of the 944 it always seemed like Porsche made it too soft -- they threatened the 911 Turbo with the 951 and the 968 had to be made softer IMO to keep the 911 on its pedestal. They do the same thing today with the Cayman, for what it's worth.. Why was there never a 968 Turbo?

I like the way the 968 looks but IMO the 951 was the sweet spot of getting the car right before all the weight-adding nanny electronics and bloat crept in. Of course I'm biased

Joe, Google 968 Turbo S. OK, you didn't see one on the local dealer's lot, but you could order one! I agree with your comments on keeping the 911 in the forefront. There have been many 911's passed on the track by equally prepared 968's. Another measure of this car is the relatively small number of TSBs and recalls generated by the model.

Mmm, I must find out more, I had no idea. I was always under the impression they dialed the 968 back from the 951. Thanks!

EDIT: Pretty rare bird. Anybody here own(ed) one?
