Default has anyone recovered their dashboard?

I was looking at my dash this afternnon. I was wondering how hard it would be to recover in vinyl or even leather/suede. I was thinking of getting a sheet and covering it myself. Has anyone tried it?

Forget suede leather, that will look horrible in short order. Guess you have never been around someone that had suede jackets or shoes to watch how long they last.

I think the big recovering problem is removing, as in shaving off, all the old vinyl. It will keep on cracking and show through the resurface material unless you do something like a heavy coverlay. Especially if you do it in leather.

I would probably do it in vinyl. It probably has to be done wit hthe dash rmoved and stripped..... I just don't want to spend an a$$load of money on a replacement dash.

Why not just grab a cracked dash out of a junkyard or one of the many cars that are being parted out on here and try it out on that? If it works...great...if it fails all you've lost is time and little bit of cash for the vinyl and whatever you paid for the junk dash. BTW there was a guy parting a 60k mile 951 on here a while back (couple weeks ago) selling a perfect black dash for $450...thats a damn good deal in my eyes.

I also have a brown dash that is totally cracked for FREE for anyone who wants to pick it up in San Francisco... (early '944 style dash, out of my '83) So if you're looking for a cheap tester, this is it. PM me

Do a search; forget whether it was this forum or the 928 forum, but someone tried removing all the old vinyl and using bondo to "finish" the dash and cover that IIRC. Supposedly it came out very nice too.

I ended up using the whole dash from my busted 88 NA. Anyway, during that time i saw COMPLETE dashes for sale on ebay (with all plastic bits, glove box etc) for ~$100 without shipping.........give it a shot, or spend $400+ from a junk yard

It was the 928 forum. Turned out fantastic. I had the link, but had a HD crash a couple of weeks ago and lost it.

Thanks for the cap links. I'm wathcing those auctions just in case.

I was wondering what it would look like to cover teh top of the dash in the matching Linen color of my interior. The black trim would seperate the upper and lower sections. I'[m trying to picture it.

Any photoshop gurus care to try it?

I think a linen dash top would be a little too reflective in sunlight. You may get a lot of unwanted glare.
I have a Coverlay cover and it looks really good but there are a few spots that are starting to warp slightly and I always have the car garaged. YMMV.
