K&N versus Fram or other OEM air filter
#1
![Question](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/icons/icon5.gif)
I'm taking a pole here. I'd like to know for the average driver if the added expense for a K&N air filter is worth the cost for both short and long term.
And if so why? I already know the K&N filters flow at higher rates over a oem filter and can be cleaned and reused a few times. But seriously, what good is a filter that can permit an engine to run 2000 rpm past it's redline for example.
There is also the thought that you get more hp and better gas economy. Personally, I've never had that experience.
I'm asking this question for a friend and myself so please be kind.
and sorry in advance if this is hundredth plus time this question has been posted.

we have a search function on the thread...seriously, this topic is a can of freakin worms that's opened at least once a month...
and as for running past redline, that's got nothing to do with an air filter.

Use the search, this has been argued to death. In my opinion, the OEM mahle filters are great; cheap too. There is some speculation that the k&n permits more dirt into your engine, but i havent done any tests myself...
Bottom line: why risk it? Performance gains won't be noticable one bit; however, the k&n filter will drastically change the intake sound.

Cleaning a K&N filter is a pain in the *** as it literally takes most of the day to air dry...etc. Plus the cost of buying the 'filter charger' is about $10 as i remember. $50 plus the $15 every 4 or 5 times to 'recharge' and the time spent to clean seems stupid to save no more than $10 on an air filter.
I wont even get into the debate on peformance changes from the K&N...all i know is im not too into Fram as they make some pretty ****ty oil filters.

My car sounds the same on Paper and K&N

Get a new filter. That's the trick. Any decent filter will flow well. The testimonials don't compare a new paper filter to the vaunted K&N.

Hey Porschephile, you misunderstood my post about redline.
If my 944 needs say 300 cfm of air to run 4500 rpm and let's assume it is the redline, then there is no point of using a filter that flows 400 cfm or more. it's sort of buying racing tires to sit in traffic with a top speed of 20 mph. in a word overkill. and for the moment let's leave out the physics of static air presure and vacume that a filter can effect.
that all.
also ythanks for pointing out that this site has a serch feature. even though one has to search for it
bad pun intended.

I have a K&N in my S2. Sound doesn't change, neither does horsepower. The stock filter flows more than enough air for the engine. Unless you do a good amount of head work and increase the engine's breathing by more than 20 or so percent, the K&N is not worth it.

Check out the following site for air-flow and filtration comparisons between various
air filter types:

This site also has interesting info about oil.

I'm sure it's been said before but I didn't think it made any difference what filter is used as the amount of air that gets into the inlet manifold is ultimately governed by the size of the inlet orifice.
In the case of the 944 this would be the AFM & the little gate inside it, & replacing that would be a major engineering feat
