Default How to pull the AC compressor without killing myself on R-12?

I just got my AC Delete kit from Paragon (they rock so much...best customer service) and I'm gonna install it tomorrow after work. Anyway, I hear that R-12, despite the fact that it gives you a HELLUVA buzz, is REALLY REALLY bad to inhale...so I don't wanna do that...So, I'm turning to the Rennlist gurus to ask advice on removing the system so that I don't breath a lot in... do I just pull the hoses off of the conpressor, or is there a little bleed thing? do I pull the hoses and evacuate for a couple of hours while the white fog dissipates?

Thanks for the advice!

It is illegal to discharge r12 into the air and its supposed effect to the ozone is the reason why there is a world wide ban on production of r12. I am not sure if its a wise idea to publically ask how to do that. I am sure some AC shop will be more than happy to evacuate your system and recycle the refrigerant for you.

yeah might as well take it to the local gas n' fix and have them vac it down so you dont ruin your lines by say, shooting them with a bb gun or hitting it with an ax to quickly vacuate the system....but im sure you wouldnt do that.

Worldwide bans don't happen because of supposed effects. Do the right thing.

Find a certified shop to recover the R12. They'll do it for a small charge.

But if you do decide to flaunt the law and vent the R12, be advised that when the R12 exits the system it will be very cold. It can freeze skin or eyes. Inhaling the R12 is bad, but not as bad as irrepairably damaged eyes.

the reason I asked is because, I did not know of any bans, and thought it was a DIY thing at home...now that I know it isn't legal to dump R-12 anywhere, I'll have it vacuumed out and recycled...

Well, I'm calling around for estimates...and at my Porsche dealer, it'll cost me $105.00 to have it DISCHARGED....so I'm plannin on calling up a place like Pep boys or some crappy little place like Mieneke...

Well, the only place that can do it today is the dealer, so, looks like I'm dropping about a hundred dollars to do this...how fun...but at least I'll have my car 50 lbs lighter and AC free by the end of the day....OH YEAH! new alternator as well...

Just for the record, while it's bad for the ozone layer, R12 won't directly hurt you if you breath some in. It's pretty inert chemically. If you were to burn R12 in a flame it decomposes into Phosgene gas which isbad for you (seeing as it was used in chemical warfare in WWI I believe) R134a is also bad for you though as it's been linked to testicular cancer and seizures. Good times. Really though just about any garage should have a recycler for R12, why pay the dealer so much?

The dealer is the only one with "authorized AC techs" in today, and I need it done today, or else it won't get done...kinda hard to work on a car in a college parking lot.... I'm at home for the weekend.

The soonest I could have it done otherwise is Monday, which I have classes, followed by work. Hmmm...gotta think about this one....
