Default Looking at an '87 944 - Quick help please

Just back from checking out an '87 944. Had a few issues that need expert opinion:

Steering fluid leaks. Can't see where as belly pan is in place. Likely the rack?

Vibration in drivetrain. Seemed to be near 2K and 4K. I was thinking "engine mounts" then maybe "clutch."

Clutch pedal near floor. Still works, but about 1" off the metal.

Otherwise fairly beat with cracked windshield and a bit of rear end damage. Engine seemed OK and tranny shifted fine.

Thinking to buy it tonight, or keep looking. I can DIY so it's parts and time.

Might be fun, eh?

Or maybe balance shaft belt? A search shows that's not an unusual problem.

Feels like the master is shot. Gotta get to this quick.

After restoring the 928, this can't be more work. A bit lighter and four less pistons!

Yup, your balance shafts are misaligned for sure. bad motor mount = vibration at all rpm

I thought if a motor mount was bad the car vibrated at idle, and the vibration stopped/got less as the revs increased.

Congratulations! Yea for $1500, there's not that much downside. But once you start sinking more money into it....

As for vibration, bad motor mounts are most likely only at idle and balance shaft off is usually at all speeds (at least that's what my engine felt when my balance shaft was off). What does a disintegrated rubber center clutch feel like?

Here's a quick update:

Windshield scheduled to be replaced by Safelite for $282.21 (Yeah!) That includes the seal.

New PS (ATF) fluid runs out of a rack boot. Where are the cheapest racks without being a cheap rack? The seal replacement job lookslike a PITA and prone to learner's mistakes.

AStuck new cheap pads on the car as the discs available ifor pick-up were $129. A piece!. The old ones were too thin and scored to be turned. I'll be putting on new discs and pads this Winter.

About 15 people-hours people of work has transformed the car cosmetically. Still need to get some touch-up paint and do some minor metal bending, but getting sharp. Interior turned out to be burgundy leather. Thought it was aged black vinyl.

Clutch check showed about 1" from edge to arm. Looks like that's good.

Adjusted clutch pedal linkage. Seems that the lock nut had come loose and it had slowly crept down. Was getting ready to rebuild the master, but thought to check. (Had that kit on-hand. Same as my 928)

Thinking that I'll be doing motor mounts. Still need to get the covers off and check the belts.

New plugs in. New oil today.

DO the motor mounts-- MAN what an improvement. all my vibration in the steering wheel and the seat is gone..

Check your belts asap.

BTW- the 944 crowd is a LOT different from the 928 crowd.

Congrats!!! and welcome to the fracus!

Nothing is more expensive than a cheap Porsche, but you should know that with a 928.

Have it inspected by someone who really knows these cars before you get into it for too much.

Good luck, I hope the inspection turns out well!

Family knows that too. My wife has set a budget of $1000 to spend on repairs before we need to discuss any. As my son and I do almost all of our own work, that's a lot of wrenching.

Was thinking to get it in for a check-up at the local 944 race car headquarters. We need shop inspections to track the cars in this PCA region, anyways.
