Default How do I know if I have short shifter?

Another dumb question from yours truly. I "think" the previous owner installed a short shift kit, but how do I know? Should I be able to measure the distance the shaft moves from 1st to 2nd gear. Is there a set distance for the standard shifter vs the distance for the short shifter? Thanks.

or...you could get your butt under the car and look....If its nice and shiny and doesnt look like crap then it probably is the short shifter.

and if you tilt the shifter to one side and it stays there... then its the old one.

Well, at 48 years old I don't get my butt under the car unless absolutelynecessary, I may not be able to get back out (although I've been told I only look 35 )

However, if I do go under the car will the linkage be a certain length if it is the short shifter?

I just need to know how I can tell if I have a short or "normal" shifter installed. I am assuming I can measure the distance the shift **** moves from 1st to 2nd gear to tell, but I don't know what the distance should be for short vs. regular shifter.

well, if you think you might have it, you probably do... the throw on 944's are pretty long, so youd know if it dodnt have it.

Based on my measurements, the shift **** moves 6" from 1st to 2nd gear. Does that sound about right for a short shifter?

I can check mine tomorrow when I get it back from the paint shop. I have the 944 Racing short shifter, so if no one replies by then I'll let you know.

MDP47: Thanks. I don't know if I have the 944 Racing short shifter, but I assume that they all have about the same range of movement. I appreciate any info you can provide. Thanks again.

I have a custom short shift kit on mine plus a shortened shift lever and I just measured 2.5" from 1st to second. I would imagine that yours is stock at 6" of throw.

Mine is about six inches too... and mine is stock without the short shift kit. There was a thread on here for the SSK group buy where someone posted before and after pics. That thread would probably help you... look at the pics and you can compare.
