my 968 / C2 wheel 2-tone repaint (pics)
Yo. After keeping these 968 wheels in my garage for almost a year with old rubber on them I finally decided to do the repaint I've been meaning to do, and eventually (within the next 2 weeks) put some new rubber on them and actually use them (imagine that). So here they are, my 968 wheels in 7"/8" variety repainted in 2-tone color scheme a la Ian's old Turbo Cup wheels from his Red turbo. I really liked the whole graphite spoke - silver lip look, and I think it might look pretty cool on my Stone Gray Metallic car (since stone gray is close to graphite). We'll see once I get tires on them. For now, here are some pics of the rims themselves, with these 2 before paint/sand pics just for fun:
notice how scratched up the front is, and how dirty and grimy the inside walls are.
ok here are the painted pics:
front wheel #1
front wheel #2 (little blurry, woops)
rear wheel #1
rear wheel #2
close up of the first one.. notice where the 2 colors collide, any suggestions for how to smooth this out? i guess i could buff it out.. or maybe hand-paint the place they meet with a thin silver or black line?
another close up of the first wheel. another issue i had is the inside edges of the spokes didnt get much spray, you can sort of see that on the upper portion. should i maybe hand paint that black? or.. leave? it still has the original primer there but.. i guess it could cause issues down the line without paint coverage?
a pic of the rear of one of the 8" wheels. i decided to sand and paint the inside sidewall of all the wheels with black ceramic paint. it was really nasty in there, with residue from about 100 different weights.. and other garbage (i think the previous owner of these wheels used that emergency tire inflation crap). looks good i think, but i didnt bother going into the back of every individual spoke to repaint.. too much work.. and no one can see them anyway, so i left them original silver.. didnt sand em.
finally, i will be painting a set of unpainted caps i have in graphite to match the wheel but i decided to snap one pic of a silver cap on the wheel, just to see what it looks like. whadya think?
---
so there you have it. if anyone is interested in the technique i used to paint these (this was my first time painting wheels start to finish so if i ever do it again i know ill do a better job), or more pics of the wheels in the middle steps of painting (lots of masking was required to do the 2 tone thing) let me know.
oh and let me know what you think of the wheels in general, the color/style, bla bla all of that. thanks!

Great job. Did you just tape off the lips prior to spraying the graphite paint? I think you did a great job of keeping the line where the two colors intersect straight.

thanks everyone
how did I mask it? well, to get the best final product the cans say to spray on the clearcoat pretty soon after spraying on the final color coat, so I couldnt spray the silver first, then mask the edges, then spray the graphite, then clear. so what i did was, mask the spokes off, paint the silver, clearcoat the silver, let dry, then took that mask off, and masked off the lip, painted graphite, clearcoat the graphite, then finito. to get the "clean" edges i jammed masking tape into the lip and pressed it down tightly against the rim with a round tip bit on a screwdriver. then i used an xacto knife to cut a line that was in the "middle" of the inner lip. did that by eye. and then i had to do that again for the second mask again. it turned out pretty good i guess, but it woulda been nice to "blend" the 2 colors together a little bit. oh well. heres 2 pics of the seperate masking efforts (i know i cant help myself with these pics)
btw, notice i removed the valve stems, had to rip them out to get them out, so i bought a set of porsche crest/silver capped stems on ebay for $20. should be cool now for some tires...

Wow, that came out really nice. With graphite center caps and a touch of gold (the emblem) those rims will rock. Can't wait to see it on your car!

Have you thought about applying a vinyl pin stripe to where the colors meet? You can pick up a roll of pin stripping pretty cheap (say an 1/8" single black line), and it would give a nice straigt line.
Oh, looks great by the way.
