Default Altenator cooling

Replaced the altenator last year, Sept 23. Yesterday the voltmeter on the dash was down to 10 or less. Took the altenator off, had it tested, and it was done.

Here is the fun part. Last year when I replaced it, the altenator was clearly for an earlier car, because the little cooling shroud wouldn't line up with the wires. So I left it off. They say higher heat will shorten the life of the altenator, but 1 year! So after installing the new altenator today, I modified the shroud to allow the cooling duct to be reinstalled. Hope to get more than one year from this one.

I guess I've been lucky. I have a rebuilt unit on it's 3rd year without the cooling duct. I'm thinking of installing it just to play it safe......

I got the same kinda problem here too. I had a good alternator, took it out, put it back in without the cooling duct and now, after a month, have no power...volts just above 10.

The early 944 and the 924S didn't even come with a cooling shroud, so I find it hard to believe not reinstalling the cooling shroud was your problem. When I bought my car it was a little over 10 years old, still had the original alternator and never in its life had a cooling shroud.

Though I guess Texas heat could compound things.

The earlier cars use a lower amperage alternator, 90A vs 115A IIRC, maybe it got toasted because of the higher demand from the car. just my 2 cents.

led, you may have hit the nail right on the head! I'm sure the altenator that I put in is a 90A. Well OK at least I have the lifetime warranty. Just gonna be a pain in the a$$ every year if I have to keep replacing it.

Along this thread.

Has anybody ever added the late model cooling duct/shroud to an early alternator?

I got one off ebay last year, but never figured how it went on or how to modify it to work on the early style....

Porsche went to the expense to make the cooling duct, must be a good reason to use it. If you have it use it I say. Maybe the alternator will last longer next time.

Both of my 951's have had the shroud cover on the alternator but I've never had the hose that attaches to the cover. Heck, I've never even seen one! Never had a problem yet...even with Texas heat.

FYI, guys that are purchasing a/c delete kits will not be able to run the rear shroud cover on the alternator, unless they source one from a a/c delete factory car. The cover the the a/c equipped cars does not fit once the alternator is lowered into the same position as the a/c compressor once was (it hits something, I can't remember what it is now). This could be a moot point, because once it is re-located lower there is more room above and beside the alternator for better cooling. YMMV

tifosiman-
I know exactly what you are talking about. Last winter I put in the a/c delete bracket. I cut the rear of the alternator cover to fit. The cooling duct never fit so I just took it off. Now, only after driving about 2 months, my alternator is shot...cant believe it! I gotta go back in there now. I suggest somehow putting that duct on even with the a/c delete bracket. I will soon figure out how.

The is a different shroud as Jeremy stated, and Paragon sells it.
