Restoring Faded/oxidized paint
Hey Guys,
The paint on the Red 944 and the White Quest is pretty faded and oxidized. Would a rubbing compound such as http://www.autobarn.net/cht-230.html that be good then I use a polishing compound such as http://www1.autozone.com/servlet/UiB...ETWX%7C%7Etrue that be good and not damage the paint?
Thnks
Mike

3m polish, and 3m hand glaze will do a number on bringing paint back. you can get it at any good automotive place. if you cant find it there.. then you will be able to find it at a place that has automotive painting supplies.

rubbing compund is harsher than polish and will not brighten up paint... not only that but turtle wax is junk.
try maguires if you cant get 3m.

I bought my car that had been sitting in the direct sun for years.....Very oxidized! I used a three step (3 bottle) process from "Mothers" Looks very good, had many people think it was repainted after. Get a buffer though, otherwise your arm's gonna hurt! Got the Mothers products at Autozone.

Damnit..Already got the turtle wax! Good thing I started on my Conquest first...its looking okay...will it look ALOT better after I wax? I'm only using the rubbing compound on the hood where its like this black crap is in the paint and I've been working on 1/3rd of the hood for an hour and a half and its finally looking GOOD again!
Used polishing compound on the driver side on the car (I've been at this for HOURS!) and it looks pretty good...
I have an electric buffer, but its not doin much good...and I figure I need the workout any way

If it's a metallic you have a challenge on your hands; red should be OK though. Just be careful, the paint is thin and clearcoats can be a real problem. Power tools can expose primer at all the ridges so go lightly until you get a feel of the abrasive you are using. I always start with the finest hand applied system to the worst area of the paint and then apply finer polishing for sheen to that area...if it works the rest of the car is usually OK.

Mike,
rubbing comnpund wont do much good for you.. you dont need to ub it out, you need to polish it out.
waxing will not make it look any better (infact cars usually look a smidge worse after waxng b/c the carnuba gives it a tiny tiny amount of haze (hard to notice unless you look really hard).. wax isnt to make a car look better, its to protect the finish underneath).
you need to get some good polish.

I had oxidation problems with the '86 pretty bad. Rubbing compound with a buffer will do wonders "IF" you know what your doing and don't burn through the paint. A f/u with Mother's Carnuba wax is a must for guards red paint. See my early post a few days ago, that's all I use on my car.
