What Happened to my phone dials?
I just got my 944 back from the shop after having the belts, rollers, front cam seal, fuel filter, and a/c serviced,p/s leak, etc. completed and I get home and took a walk around my vehicle only to find that all my phone dials look like they had some kind of acid or solvent ran down them!!?? I tried to clean them but the run marks don't seem to want to come off? What happed? I just detailed my vehicle a few days prior to taking it to the shop. Perhaps the tire shine washed down the rims and permanently discolored/damaged them?? Has this ever happened to anyone? I tried searching a bit but didn't find anything quite like this! Sorry I don't have a camera at the moment. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Alex

I hope they didn't use one of those one-step wheel cleaners that remove brake dust on them. I did that once on my Jeep and ruined the clearcoat forever. Try using a strong mix of Dawn and water and clean them well. Dry them and apply a good coat of wax; if they are still streaked you will need a new coat of clear after sanding.

I've tried Fantastik oxy clean, more tire shine?,metal polish/cleaner,bug/tar remover in very small areas and nothing has made a difference...So I can lightly sand and apply a clear coat? What about having to paint?

Sounds to me like they put too harsh of an acid cleaner on them. Back when I worked as a service valet at a porsche dealer, I would wash cars, and they had the stuff, but told us to NEVER use it on a Porsche....as this would happen. take it back to them and see what they have to say. However, they may not do much as you did not notice it upon accepting delivery of the vehicle, and you signed a paper....or should have...
And this is why if my car goes to the dealer, they don't wash it. I request it EVERY time... They used that sh*t on my car once, and got it on the paint. I've got pink spots around the wheels on the body, and for some reason, on the back bumper. I didn't notice till I got home, and that's what they told me...you didn't notice it upon delivery of the car, you signed the paper, it's prolly your fault.

Hmm, I didn't sign anything...But I don't really know if THEY applied anything to the tires/rims or if some how the product I applied before I dropped my vehicle off did this but...I have used the product before with no adverse effects!

if you had your car serviced at the Porsche dealer, Most likely, they washed it. And, most likely, the service valets aren't exactly the most educated people around. like doing it the quick way, not the right way. and 99% of the time, they don't see it as a Porsche, they see it as just another car. (I was the only exception... we also were a jag dealer, and the service writers would get pissed cuz I'd always wash the Porsches first...unless a jag customer was waiting). But the average ammount of time it takes them to wash a car is approx. 15 minutes. I'm putting money on the dealer spraying some sort of acid cleaner on the wheels...Especially cuz you've had no adverse affects with the stuff you've been using.

After I refinished my old 15" PD's, including clear coat, a cat in the neighborhood pissed on two of them and I didn't see it that morning. By the next day it had dried and etched drip or run marks into the finish. Could this have happened to yours?

dan, I don't think so...unless that cat(s) pissed on all 4?!! I have an update! I took the car back to the dealer today and they seem to be wanting to skate out of there responsibility for the damage! First of all they said that the rims have been painted ...ok..so? Secondly, they then went on to say that they don't feel they are responsible for something previously painted or something that had been reconditioned in some fashion to cover up the old condition of the rims?? I said what ever YOU put on my rims to "CLEAN" them should not have been that strong to strip paint off if they had been actually repainted before!!!!! They said they will call me tomorrow will some info. I just want my rims returned to me in the same or similar condition that they received them in!!! Minus the streaks!!!!!
