smoked wires in the 924- help?
ok so i had the damn little odo gear come loose again and i had to take the speedo back out to fix it. Took a good half an hour to fix, but when i put it back together and started the car, smoke comes pouring out from under the dashboard. I rip the dash back apart in time to find the wire going from the right side of the column from the turn signal switch to the ignition switch-ground?- to be smoked down to bare wire- theres a wire next to that that is pretty much fried too. Then i found a wire going to the headlight switch - ground- looks like it used to be brown, or grey, to be fried also, where two wires come together. Before this happened everything was working great. The lights come up, highbeams, turn signals, wipers, everything. When i started the car and put the lights on, SMOKE......

hey carl, i need the wiring from the turn signal switch-kinda rainbow shaped connector- from the ignition switch- square plug w/ BIG red wires on it- and i need the plug for the back of the headlight switch, all connected together if possible, or separate w/ plenty of wire for resoldering if possible!
also, do you have a black turn signal switch- no cruise- and do you have a headlite switch- i dont know if mine is burnt but possible.

Yeah, Dan I got all that stuff, wouldn't matter that it was off an early car would it?
let me know in an email or something, I'll pull it off and bring it up there on the 11th if i can.

You probably pinched a wire when you were monkeying around with your odo gear and puting things back together.
Might be hard to tell where you pinched it if everything is melted and carboned up. You also should check what size fuses you have in the headlights. I don't remember exactly how that works on an early 924 but you can get a lot of juice running through the dash and switches for the headlights, especially if you are running overwatt bulbs. Guys have had wires go up in flames under there more than once.
Finally, I think there are some hot wires into your dash that aren't fused until they leave the dash, but don't hold me to that.

bad thing is its a ground problem, somewhere. It looks like all the wires that burned are ground wires and there are no fuses on ground wires...but there will be!

You've got a serious problem, few people know it but these cars are powered by smoke.
All smoke is contained in the standard wiring and normally don't cause any problems but once you've pinched a wire and the smoke came out there's no way of putting it back.
Only solution is a new wiring loom with the special dark black smoke (factory code 99ZZZ29-012) grey smoke might work but it will never get the car back to its original performance level.
