we pose as track workers at a local autox and steal the infamous tifo-clubsport and pull the switcheroo on his transaxel. By the end of the show he is amazed by the difference in his ride- YOUVE BEEN OVERHAULED!

sorry jer i just couldnt keep these pics to myself, it was too much funn!! I didnt put a timer on it but i believe if you leave out time for cleaning the new one, we did the trans swap in about three and a half hours, not bad! That pinion was toasty.

very nice...
Jeremy, what suspension setup are you running? You've probably been asked this plenty of times, but I am starting to resarch into what suspension I want for my car, so that i have an amount to save up for and purchase it in a couple months. I'm not looking for a cheap setup. I really wanted the Escort cup setup I finally convinced myself that it would be un streetable... I am considering the leda setup, so obviously spending 2K-3K on suspension is not an issue for me. A cars handeling far out ways its straightline performance to me, and when i come to the most important part of the car for me, I want to go all out. I kinda see you as a suspension guru, so i ask... Anyone is welcome to answer however.

well, we went to a local autox and i got to take two good runs in tifos club sport. The third run i opted to stay out and watch some people run. After helping push a jetta off the course and then watching a celica get pulled out of a ditch, we saw tifos car being pushed off the starting line. Not a good day for racing i guess. Seems the r&p had other ideas and took a break. I got in one run in the 924s but it was alittle loose compared to my old car, time to start collecting parts! Luckily nine44 had a trans in the garage so we did the three hour swap and off we go!

No way! I'm starting to fear for my trans now.
I'm glad you had one to swap in there. Was that trans that died a 944NA trans?

yeah, he had an NA trans. I got one run in, I DNFed, came in hot on the only damn slalom in the whole coarse and went to the wrong side. The car felt great, pretty good run going till the oopsie. Oh well. I wonder if the guy in the GTI has a buddie with a spare trans and is running within hours of the breakage? Damn I love this SWO group we have, it's all about the cars! Still a good day, some racing, some wrenching, some running.

I can say that I help about as much as rock on his tranny. Mostly moral support. I was in charge of clutch and e-break. Lot fasted then the tranny swap at the fest. To much beer involved there.

Thanks to all of you! I owe you all. It's nice that we have such a great group of people around here with the knowlege to do just about anything on these cars, and willingness to stick together. When things get tough, the cream rises to the top, the sludge hits the bottom. We gotta lot of cream around here .

Andy, I'll start looking for a new trans so that I get get your spare out and back to you.

It was a day of attrition at the autocross yesterday. In only 3 runs of the firt heat (of 3 heats) we had a 71 firebird die and go on a trailer, a rabbit break it's trans, a celica fly into a ravine and get towed out, and then my car blew it's trans. It was an EXTEMELY fast course, but I doubt that was any part of the problem. I think it was just all cooincidence. It was really cool weaving around the fire buildings on the back of the course, I hit 63mph before going into the 180degree bend.

I don't understand why the pinion gear died. This trans was a rebuilt unit purchased in November 2002. I don't due clutch dumps and don't power shift. It had less than 6,000 miles on it. There had to be an issue with the rebuild or trans to begin with. I can't believe autocross and extremely limited daily driving can be that tough on a trans in that short of a time period.

PS: Dan, did you see the name on the side of the flatbed in the first photo?

I'm sorry I missed out on helping yersterday.
I'll keep my eyes peeled for an S2 trans. I assume that's what you'll be looking for.
That's not the first pic I've seen with a shattered pinion gear. I wonder what caused it. I know you don't abuse that car.

Wow, what a weekend! Sounds like you guys had a busy one. Tifo's car looks great. Too bad about the ring and pinion. I had a similar box of rocks a few years ago. Would prefer not to go through that again.

Rather than looking for another box to replace the broken one - you might consider rebuilding the one you have. With all the concentration of expertise in your area - it should be possible to pool the knowledge and labor and rebuild it for less than buying another one. I rebuilt my own box a few years ago. I'm sure you guys could easily do the same.

Best of luck regardless.

By the way - whose car is in the background in this photo? It looks a lot like mine - right down to the "graphite" painted PDs.

Except mine's a little rough in the body...
