my introduction to air coolers......
it took alittle getting used to. The pedals are in the wrong spot. The seat is vertually non supportive. I figured out the quirks of the car on my 192 mile ride home from the po's house. The starters "flat spot" showed itself half way home and i had to push start the car the rest of the day. The car handles great, but has alot of body roll, thats going to have to change. No swaybars huh, that will have to change as well. i checked to car over for rust, body work, signs of damage etc... it looked pretty clean, but 914's are all prone to rust.
The first week is always great in a new car. The starter was replaced the next day. Everyone wanted a ride in the new car. A pca guy pointed out some spots prone to cancer and found little. The prices for parts for this thing are very affordable, compared to most 944 parts and esp. 911! Still looking for some fender flares, that would be sweet. I noticed the clutch was low, prolly why the new cable was in the trunk huh.
Took the car out for a spin the other nite. I found some nice twisties on the west side that i reserve for spirited tromps and ran them nicely. I got to the nice winding hill that is perfect for feeling the low end umpf thses cars have, and got stuck behind a soccer mom. Then the clutch pedal hit the floor. I managed to get the car into second and get to a baseball field parking lot. Seems as though the clutch puts pressure on a tube that sticks through the firewall. The tube doesnt support pressure when its rusted out, hm...whoda thought? Tonite i welded up a piece of 1/8" steel where the hole is and welded the tube to the plate. The car is back in business but im thinking its gonna be a long winter of welding this winter.

I'm thinking about buying a Volkswagon Old Bug just to use as a winter beater.. there is one in the local papers for $700.00 that apparently starts well....as for the rest, I dunno...but damn. a $700.00 car....I almost can't pass that up....

i think factory they are around 96 hp. With some upgrades im thinking of 150hp is where i want to be. The sky is the limit though if you are boosting etc...esp w/ the six cylinders. I know of one guy w/ around 200hp w/ a four 2.0 and it is FAST...i mean the car only weighs around 1900lbs.

it's all about the hp/weight ratio just some bigger barrel carbs, bore it.. maybe stroke it, change up the gear ratio and you have an awesome lil track car.. those lil cars can do around a G on the skid pad with some minor mods (so I've been told) and just under 2000 lbs lightened a bit.. pushin 120 to the wheels.. imagine 150 to the wheels at that weight!

They seem like nice cars. There's only one other person in my small town(about 500 people) Who has a Porsche and he has a 914. I saw him one day on my street, I was gonna run out there and have him stop, but I didn't want to scare the S%@t out of him

yeah, they are cool little cars. They do leave some to be desired in their structural integrity. They need alot of extra bracing and plating of the frame to be stiff enough to race. This winters project.
sam- yeah its like my natural zen habitat under the car.
