Default Is the removable roof stupid or is it me?

I can't seem to figure out the removable roof on my '88 951S. Sometimes when I lower it, the motor retracts all the way and the roof is released, and sometimes it stops and locks the roof shut. The owner's manuel is no help to me. Could someone please clue me in?

Thanks.

Ian

Depends on where your key is in the ignition

I believe first click in the ignition is where it unlatches, the rest just opens and closes it

That's right. First click of the ignition key unlatches the motors so the roof can be removed. Turn the key past that and it just raises and lowers. HTH.

Running on your switches are working correctly, you need to have the key in the off position in order for the arms to retract and the roof to come off. This is to prevent a user from closing the roof on the expressway at 55mph...have the arms retract fully and the sunroof come flying off in the wind. With that said, make sure the roof is securley latched before driving off! I had one experience when i first got the car, the sunroof was not latched (i drove off not knowing and hit the backroads). At about 35-45mph the sunroof will actually lift up from the wind. Sort of scary thinking its just two plastic latches holding it to the car!

Hey!

That's neither here nor there.. besides, I can still sit in it and make VROOM VROOM noises and lower and raise the sunroof if I want.

Personally I think its a fairly easy system once you figure it out. And if they didnt engineer it this way, imagine how many of you would be pissing and moaning about detatching sunroofs at 80MPH hmmmmmm? I thought so.

And I like having a hugeass sunroof that comes out.

Serge,

Realign your lifting arms then check the micro switch between the visors..sounds like the problem is between the seat and the wheel!! VROOM VROOM

IIRC< even if you start to drive with the roof dissengaged, the arms will come up and it will "lock" at a certain speed. Anybody care to try it to prove my theory?
