Default vroom BANG! clunk clunk (engine blew)

Well, last night I was driving home from a buddy's place at about 2:00 at night. I was on the freeway doing a steady 70 mph. when I saw my exit and coasted down the ramp. I dropped it down to about 45 when I glanced at my oil pressure like I frequently do, it was lower than normal at coasting speed (aprx. 23 psi). So I decided to take a right and pull into the near stripcenter parking lot to check the oil. Just before my right turn the oil pressure gauge needle dropped to zero, and the engine got really noisey and immediately BANG! a massive cloud of smoke comes from out the tailpipe and from under the hood, oil splatted out all over the parking lot and i could hear valves crunching and what sounded like a cylinder slaming. After the motor commited suicide I poped the hood to see oil and smoke everywhere. Last night sucked.

here is a cell phone pic where you can see the oil all over the parking lot.

Damn Dave... Now it's time to obtain a coveted LSD 6 spd and a 968 motor for a swap!..

all kidding aside- That just plain sucks... Get a second opinion before you buy any bullets to "put her down"

if i had the money I would do the 968 swap in a heartbeat, there is one on ebay right now for $7K. I also won't "put her down", its not in my vocabulary, this car means too much to me and is just sick right now. The exterior and interior is too prime for me too let it go just because of a blown motor. I have a classic Nova in my driveway i'm trying to sell for $1000, when i sell that the money is going toward a new motor for the 944.

Holy crap dlefko! I'm sorry to hear about the engine man.. For the replacement, are you going to buy a used and drop it in? Or are you planning on doing a complete rebuild. I don't think the block or head is good anymore on your car. Either way best of luck to your future engine project..

If an engine is leaking oil that bad after "blowing", I'm not thinking that's a very good thing.

David,

So sorry to hear that. Really sucks. At least your car is one of the nicest NA 944s I've seen. Well worth fixing.

There are a few dismantlers in Houston who specialize in the 944 and often have engines for fairly reasonable prices (one just went for $510) on eBay. Don't know what they would charge if you just call them. The other option possibly is a parts car that you can pull the engine from. I've seen some cars in TX go for under or around $1k, fully running cars. But, that doesn't help you immediately.

Shoot. I'm sorry. You put a lot of work into getting your car running again.

i don't have the time to do a complete build. I'll have to find a moderately used motor to drop in i guess. It would be nice to put and S or S2 motor in there, but i want to be able to keep my SFR exhaust.

Whoa I'm so sorry man. When you do your rebuild or you drop in a new engine tell me. I go down to Houston a lot to visit family and what not and I'd be more than happy to lend a hand and hopefully make the project go faster.

Thanx for the sympathy and input guys, bottom line is she just needs a heart transplant and right when I sell this Nova she will be first on the list.
George, I appreciate the compliment, i guess this incident will give me a chance to make what's under the hood look up to par with the rest, can you say polished motor?! I'll do some research this weekend on those dismantlers and hopefully have some good candidate motors chosen.

hmm...so..... what would be my realistic options if I wanted to get a little creative with my new motor plans in the $700-$1200 range just on the motor?

2.7L would be a viable alternative , it's a little torque-y and I'm not sure if anything would be additional for your auto. , BTW have you replaced the flex disc yet?

If not - you have other options..
