I use a wire brush that's attached to my bench grinder to do the tops, just be gentle and stay away from the sides of the pistons.

You're just fine - if you take the pistons off - get a wirebrush on em (JUST THE TOP!)

I'd stay away from power brushes, just hand wire brushes and a little gasoline only.
