Default OMG im so screwed with my pistons (edit: okay not so screwed anymore)

Okay everyone. I took off my head finally today. Are the tops of pistons supposed to be flat except for that small circlish indentation? Because if they are then I AM SCREWED because I have to buy new pistons. I can see the indentations from my valves hitting the pistons I think but all four of them are dented in the same place uniformly so I didn't know if it was normal or not. I will post pictures when my sister returns home because she borrowed my digital camera for the night.

Don't panic, I think your 2.7 pistons should have valve reliefs. Somebody please confirm this.

Probably not a big deal... Smooth them out and you should be fine.

Unless you have the engine out of the car, then you may want to look into picking up some used pistons...although they might be tough to find. They are the same as S2 pistons IIRC. I paid $125 for 4 for my 951, btw.

Edit:

Or perhaps they are valve reliefs...as others have mentioned. Probably more likely if they are uniform as others said.

I'm pretty sure the 2.7L does have valve reliefs in the pistons. If they are all identical and uniform you shouldn't worry.
Post some pics when you can.

Well i dont know if it's "smooth-outable" because the dents are really really deep. I probably will have to replace them with used ones. Wouldn't pistons for the 944 2.7L, 944 S2, and 968 all be the same since they all have the same block?

Hey Pete that's what i thought at first...except some of them were a little smaller than the others and not completely the same. I'm HOPING that's the case. I will get pictures as soon as I can.

The S2 and 968 pistons have 4 valve relief pockets in them and have a different compression ratio.

Did you break your timing belt? If not, I think you're ok.

If the valves did that, they would be bent to hell.....

Phew talk about a loadoff. Thanks guys. But hey, one more question, that black stuff peeling off the pistons...is that normal? I mean what would they look like if they were in "perfect" condition

Haven't been using Techron have you?

When they are new they look smooth and polished. Don't worry they will clean up nicely.
