Default Matt Olde, Do you have an update on the 944S3 project?

Hey Matt, have you been able to get the S3 started?

I have a lot of interest in this, as I have decided to keep my car (I have been seriously thinking about selling it for the last two weeks, but that feeling has finally passed <thank god>). My plans are to possibly skip the winter paint job project (I'll let you know XSBOOST!) and start working toward a 968 3.0 swap.

I've been thinking about a 968 3.0 swap for a long time, Pete and I have discussed this one over several beers in the past. This would be the icing for my "944 ClubSport" project. Lightweight, great suspension, no frills, no lag, and lot's of power.

So......................................................I'd love to hear that you had a happy ending to your project, and also want to get a detailed parts list and "what not to do's" from you once all is done...............

Plus, I really want to hear your input on how the car runs/drives after the change...

Thanks for being a pioneer,

Jeremy

I'll help all that I can with the swap.
Matt is real close, I think he's having a wiring problem with the alarm that's preventing it from starting.

Excellent! Thanks, I'll supply the pizza and Warsteiner. Renee may not understand why a perfectly good 82K mile engine will be coming out, but.......

I thought that was the last piece of the puzzle. Once that is sorted, a nice little diagram of what needs to be done regarding the harness/DME would save us a lot of time and trouble.

The other things that are a big questionmark are the torque tube, clutch, and bell-housing. The exhaust will have to be custom, I know. Fabricating a solution for the airbox will be easy as I can use the stuff for an S2 and stick it under the header panel on my car.

Torque tube will be fine. You need an S or S2 bellhousing and flywheel. The 16V engines have one ref. sensor instead of two. For exhaust you'll need the 968 or S2 manifold and have a custom job done from the collector to the cat.
What tranny do you have in there now? I don't think the NA trans would be strong enough. A 951 or S2 trans would be ideal.

OK, that helps a lot. So what does the different amount of reference sensors mean? Wouln't that be a non-factor if I get the complete motor (with the flywheel, etc) and wiring harness/DME? Or is there something I am missing there?

Yep, I know this could be an eventual issue. The one in there now is a rebuilt 944 n/a unit with 5K miles on the rebuild. My thought is to drive it with that transmission after the swap, while beginning the search for an S2 trans (LSD wouldn't matter, I'd just buy a new quaife unit instead of hoping that the original LSD unit is still good).

I think Matt is doing the same thing, no?

Isn't there a guy from Dayton that lives off Wayne Ave that popped into Rennlist last year, that has a 944 with a 968 motor in it? We should stalk him down and pick his brain, plus check out the car in person.

If you get a complete 968 motor with bellhousing, you would need a 968 torque tube. The 968 bellhousing is bigger and 2 piece.
If you use an S or S2 bellhousing you can keep your present torque tube.

tifo,
If you go threw with this project keep us updated!! Your car will definitely be even sweeter with that 3.0L sitting between the front frame rails, great low end torque for autocrossing. fun, fun, fun..

If you do decide to do it, let me know. I will fly down and help, just need to know a few weeks in advance.

See the wiring diagram here

My 968 Swap was from an 944S, so it was a little easier. Don't have a whole lot of BTDT as my mechanic did the swap. However, I can offer whatever assistance from a technical perpsecitive that I can.

Excellent, thanks! I have that one saved already, but I seem to recall that someone mentioned in one of Matt's threads that there is something off in the diagram that is an issue, want to get some clarification from Matt O. regarding that...

OK, so, how does your car drive with the swap? Keep the original transmission? Any issues? Thanks!

He'll only sell it if he gets a very good offer. I think he was just testing the waters.

Noones going to pay near enough what he put into it, ESPECIALLY with the car not even running- any prospective buyer would be taking a huge chance that the problem is simply the DME, as he suggests, and not something serious

ECU I think your right about that, IIRC Matts never even heard the motor run prior to doing the install , I think he will get alot more for the car if he gets it running , hopefully he will sort it out considering all the hard work he's put into it. It would be a shame if he never gets to drive it either!
