You can make a 2.5L 951 head work on the 968 block, just look at Lindsey Racing website, they sell heads that have been modified to work with the larger bore and also modified the cooling passages so they line up. So if an aftermarket tuner can pull this off, I wouldn't think it would be an issue for Porsche to have done the same......

As far as using the 968 head on the 2.7L motor, well I would think that if you went through the trouble of swapping in the 968 pistons that it would be possible. But if you go to all that trouble you should put in a 968 crank and rods to bring the motor up to 3.0...... And yes you would still need the Variocam controls etc....

In that case, the pistons from a 968/s2 could be transplanted into the 2.7l motor- w/o the stroke from the longer valves it would still be a 2.7 but the 968 variocam head would work? I dont mind doing the head pistons etc but all that torquetube/clutch/trans/yada replacement would have me skeeered.
Aha, there's the rub! You would have to change flywheel and clutch. The 16V has one sensor and needs the S, S2, or 968 flywheel which in turn needs the bigger clutch.

The 2.7 head does fit the S2/968 block so I would have to say the S2/968 head fits the 2.7 block. I just don't think I've ever heard of anyone building a 16V 2.7 before.

they may have used the 2.5 head since it has the ceramic coated chocolatey centers- and just put in bigger valves. I will have to compare 968vs9442.7 headgaskets....

dunno about this bit of info...I'm pretty sure the 968 DME is all there is...might be an extra unit for the tiptronic tranny though

A couple of notes from my conversion.
* We used a 951 radiator, but required some minor cutting to make it fit (it's maybe half inch taller).
* As for the S2 airbox, to play with, but it won't fit under my nose panel due to a dent someone put in with an SUV. Bryan Gunn's webpage on his S2 engine swap mentioned that an S2 nosepanel will not fit under an NA nose panel -- but will under a 931 vented nose panel. (Or just go with a cone)

Thanks Joe. If you check out my profile link below, you will see that I have enough space under my panel. (S2/951)

I read Bryan's page, I have it saved actually. The 931 panel does afford more room as it is missing the re-inforcement area behind it. To comment on this, if anyone else is contemplating this and wants to use a 931 front panel, there is a slight amount of cutting to be done to the existing brackets on the car to make the 931 panel fit ( the outside vents hit the 944 panel support uprights, a notch has to be cut out on each..............................).
