Default dirty dirty dirty dirty windshield

yes. it should be simple. windex paper towels and 10 minutes right? well i cannot get my windshield clean. i have tried a few products, one was a professional glass cleaner from the auto parts store, it came in an aerosol can, i tried rubbing alcohol, thought it could be a tar type substance from the road. and the other home products. no joy.

i notice it mostly when driving in the sun, its best described as looking thru a hazy windshield. the glare is terrible any thoughts?

Do you park under or near trees? I've heard that tree sap can be really brutal on glass. From what I remember it can actually pit the glass.

On the inside or on the outside? If it's on the inside, it could simply be the vapor from oils in cleaning compounds and moisteners used on the dash or other interior pieces collecting on the windshield. I'd recommend the vinegar-based Windex and a whole lot of paper towels, clean thoroughly. Always works on mine. . .

well it could be both. hte glass is 11 years old and has been in the hawaii sun for about 3 years. it has not been cleaned much in those years and i dont recall it being under any trees.

after i clean it, it should be smooth but its not. i was thinking id try some comet orother gritty cleaner and try to buff the hell out of it. you cant scratch glass wth paste right? maybe some toothpaste?(it at least would prevent cavities)

use some fine OO steel wool to get the heavy stuff off. It takes it off and doesnt scratch up the glass.

Or go over the surface lightly with a VERY sharp Exacto blade. Don't "dig" at it, just slide across the surface at about a 45-degree angle. That's how I prepped all my glass for tinting and it worked extremely well. And make sure the surface is wet when you do it (spray bottle or something).

Could the glass be pitted from sand blasting perhaps? Eastwood ( http://www.eastwood.com ) has a glass polishing "kit" that may help.

That Eastwood polishing kit looks pretty interesting. My windshield has kind of a haze on it (outside), and I think that's causing the wipers to smear and chatter all the time.

Anyone try the Eastwood kit?

PS--I've found Bon Ami to work very well cleaning glass! It was recommended by a top auto detailer in a magazine some years ago.
