Default Cost per Mile

Here's some useless trivia. Does anyone else keep a spreadsheet to track cost per mile on their cars? I track everything but gas and insurance, and then divide by the miles since I bought it.

The 944 is sitting at $1.00 per mile after 2 years and about 10,000 miles. It was down to $0.96, but then I had a $600 service bill that bounced it back up. That includes purchase price and all service, but not gas, insurance or car washes. I have a shop do most of my service, so I bet anyone who does their own work could knock that down a good deal.

That compares to my wife's Acura MDX with about 48k at $0.85 per mile and my '92 Civic with 176k at $0.11

MDX is still coming down because most of the costs are in the purchase price so more miles in the denomenator really helps. Civic's been very flat for the last 5 years or so. And I hope the 944's continues to come down, but it's tricky because I don't put a lot of miles on it.

$0.18 per mile

This is for my daily driver 83 944, if I average out the miles over the 10 years I've owned it.

If you include all of the crap I have done to it because I wanted to, and not because it needed repair, I'm at a scary $1.50 per mile.

Yes, I do this too - I've tabulated all the costs and have everything in a spreadsheet; still have to finish entering in my recent purchases and total it up though. It'll probably end up being about the same cost as a Beech King Air.

you have to subtract the residual value.

after the check from the insurance co it cost $11,100 to drive the red 89 S2 18,000 miles doesnt include gas or insurance. thats about .66 a mile

Paid about 12500 to drive the legend coupe 75000 miles doesnt include gas or insurance, includes timing belt/water pump at 60k, tires, brakes, radiator, and 125 for door handle. thats about .17 a mile

Tom, on the bright side you have what, ~100 miles on the new S2? You could probably sell it for a grand or two more than you paid for it so I figure your CPM is -$10-20!
I'm probably over $20K into my NA, unfortunately that's over 5.5 years/19K miles, I was ~.50/mile until that $10,000 motor! I try not to think about the residual value doesn't matter since I'm not selling.

If I figure everything I've done to the car since I bought it I'm looking at a horrifying $3.97 per mile! If I just figure the things that had to be done it would be around $1.65 per mile. Bottom line is that I have to drive it more! I've only put around 3500 miles on it since I bought it but it will be driven a lot more now since it's all finished.

Yeah, it helps to drive it, if you care about utility.

I've put 124K miles on the 83 and counting, since I bought it in 1994.

if we dont take into account the residual, i am at $1.38 before sales tax for tne new S2.

i just paid sales tax on the new one. that kills the profit. on the bright side, i bought a 1:24 die cast of a 951 when i got the red S2.

i was bummed the only color i could get it in was gray with a burgandy interior. Now it proudly sits in the display case next to the 1:24 red Z28.

Just gotta get a set of D90s, and a set of Firbird rims for the cars.

I couldn't give you an exact number, but its very close to zero at the moment. However, in the next 3 weeks or so, new clutch, engine, shocks, struts, and a bunch of bushings are going in.

Every thousand miles I'm amazed at how bulletproof these cars can be.

Not counting gas or insurance, I got everyone beat so far. $11.67 per mile since I took ownership in October. Can't wait till I get everything worked out, although I probalby will be at about $15/ mile by then.

the NSX is at about $.95 a mile, and the bike is at about $1.10.
My sunbird, OTOH, is at about $.30....

The 944T is about $3.60/mile over 4yrs.

The 930, well so far Im at $38.96/mile after almost exactly one year. Dont cringe though. Its dropping like an anchor. When I first got it I was at $32,000/mile so theres been an 821 fold improvement.
