Default Sway bar size?

Could anyone tell me what size the front sway bar is on a stock 85.5 NA?

Have mine torn apart and the new inners are the wrong diameter (too large) and the outers are the wrong shape to fit...

OE is 20mm - it's likely that you got 23mm as that was the other popular optional swaybar. The ends should be round - if they have a flat side, then you got the ones for an early steel arm car (83-85.1).

It's a great idea to actually measure the sway bars before ordering parts - unless you are the original owner, not telling what combination you may have.

Good Luck!

Not to highjack the thread, well okay I did, just once.

Skip are you saying that an 86 OEM front sway bar won't fit on an early car.

They should be able to fit ones from an 86 on an early car..ERAU944 put my S2's old stock sway bars on his 84 with no problems besides needing bigger drop links because of the diameter difference.

thats righto!

and before that i had an '87 944 front swaybar on in the old drop links... i just used the bushings from that bar when i put it on, and the ends from the old bar. the S2 outers needed a little bit bigger outer bushing, but you can hone out the bushings a bit and it'll go right in.

The 86 bars will fit early cars using the correct bushings with no other parts needed. In 87 Porsche upsized the centre bushing carriers to accomodate the larger sway bars available that year - from then on 25.5mm and above bars will require the new carriers (without modifying the bushings - not recommended).

I think I have one of each size in my garage. Just need an accurate scale.
