Default Oil psi needle jumps up and down?

My oil psi needle on the gauge starts to jump up and down when the car gets warm. I suppose it is the sender unit!?
Is it hard to change? Is it expensive?

Thanks
Dave

It is most likely the sender. It should run around $50 to $60. It's a simple job. Disconnect 2 wires, unscrew the old one and screw in a new one. It's just below the oil filter.

Hi Dave,

I have the same "problem" with my gauge. Please let me know if and how you fix the problem. I've had the car for over 2 years and it's been like that since day 1.

Thanks...

I'm not sure if a new sender unit will cure it completely. I put a new one (item from a dealer), and the needle occasionally vibrates at idle (on not-hot engine, with the pressure around 4 units).
There is a small hole in the sender body through which oil gets to the sender. If there is an air bubble trapped in, maybe this is the problem? But I don't know how to purge air out of it (there is no bleeding hole).

On my 85.5 944 the needle bounced around like a VU meter. A new sender cured it.
It may also be a good idea to pull the OPRV and clean it real good while you're there.

Mine will flicker occasionally when warm at an idle, but I don't pay too much attention to it when it does that.

It looks like the OPRV just is on car until 1987. Mine is a 1989. Is that true?

No, you have the later one piece valve.
Do a search for 'OPRV' in this forum.
