Default The Atkins diet for a 944...lose weight, feel great!

Alrighty then...

I've now realized that 944's are a little on the portly side for my taste, after reading a couple weigh-ins. As Cartman would say...they aren't "fat," just "festively plump."

I want to compile a list of possible ways to put the 944 on a diet...whether it's 1/2 a pound or 30 pounds, I want to know what your ideas are!

I am having fantasies of a 2500 lb 944 <drool>!

So please post any and all ideas you have for weight reduction in this thread, so others can reference it later! Also, if the weight reduction requires the purchase of other parts, please include a source and approximate price if you have that info. Thanks in advance!

take out spare tire, rear carpet, and sound proofing, that seems to save a bit, then the back seat back, then take out the windsheild waser bottle in the front, thats about all i have done and i like it

Gut the interior. Not sure what that's worth in weight.
A/C delete, about 50 pounds and lowers your CG
Replace windows with lexan (I think that's the right thing), saves weight but I don't know if it's street legal
CF hood
Race seats save a decent amount
Dave951's light-weight torque tube saves some weight
fiberglass/carbon fiber body panels
Go on your own diet

there's a great spreadsheet out there for 951's. PM me with your e-mail address if you want me to send it to you.

Ok then, I guess I'll start!

I was kind of kidding about getting her down to ~2500 lbs. However, that would be equal to adding appx. 45hp! Not to mention the difference in handling! I would think the N/A guys especially are into losing weight!

Anyhow...I'll start with the obvious.

Wheels-
Does anyone have weights on the factory wheels? Is this a worthwhile place to seek lighter weight based on what other options are available in our bolt patterns? What do the Fuchs/Cookies/PD's weigh?

Hood-
Has anyone weighed their stock hood? I'd guesstimate ~40 lbs. Are there any CF or FG alternatives here? That's probably worth ~20 lbs off the nose, not a bad start!

A marginal amount, yeah.

As far as wheels go, the factory wheels are all pretty light. Fuchs might be a little lighter than CC's. A lot of the aftermarket wheels can be heavy.

A CF hood could save a decent amount of weight too.

check out gt racing's catalogue:http://www.gt-racing.com/catalog/default.htm

From their catalogue: 924/944/944T Hood:16lbs (original 79lbs)

What sources do we have for aftermarket hoods? I don't care too much about finish, as long as they fit without having to re-engineer them!

Actually, the hoods are rediculously heavy. I damned-near gave myself a hernia after lifting the 931 hood on 944fanatic's na because it didn't have the hood struts. GT-Racing claims 79 pounds for the stock hood, and 14 for theirs (dunno if it's the fiberglass of CF hood).

79 lbs?!!?!? Holy hairy dingleberries, Batman!

If that's the case, I will probably end up w/ an aftermarket hood. WOW!

If you change the front bumber to a euro bumper I think it saves 40lbs or so

Good grief...

If my estimates are close, then that means...

Hood + rear glass + euro bumpers = nearly 150 pounds worth of reduction!

The cost would be about 450 (FG) or 650 (CF) for the hood, complete;

595 for the rear glass;

No idea what a euro bumper setup costs.

maybe those rear hatch replacements, that were on AIR or whatever it was back then.. might be lighter than glass? they made the back a straight down window adn a fiberglass flat back.. kind of.
