Default 944S head cracked

Just finished putting on the head to a 944S and the head cracked after running for about 45 - 90 sec. Had good oil pressure. Had water in the car. I do not know why it cracked. It cracked between # 2 and 3 cylenders. The crack goes from above and to the right of #3 exhaust outlet almost to the top of the head.

So now do I find a 16v head or just put an 8v head on it. What is involved with putting a 8v head on it? Any one have a cheap 16v head (Albert)?

Bummer. can you post pics?

Good 16v heads are not cheap. There was a 944S complete engine in Rennlist classified for $1500. Of course swapping engines is much more work. You could take the head off that one...

You should find out why that one cracked before you put another head on it. Can't be due to overheating after only 90sec.

Good luck finding a head... After mine was ****ed up by an auto mechanic i used to go to, i figured this to be an option... but u just can't find them... and if you do... its a huge pain in the *** to rebuild it and then put that one back on (as you know...) Basically you have a 1000-2000 dollar paperweight now...

Sorry about what happened, but i am in the same boat as you... I feel your pain...

Cheers,
Jonas

To add insult to injury, check out the 951 thread. A bunch of 951 owners are buying 944S heads for their boosted cars. These heads are going to be impossible to find in a few years.

Yes I need to find out why it cracked. I also do not think that it overheated that fast.

Have any of you guys put an 8v on a 16 v car?

The 8v will -fit- on a 16v block, but you would be changing all your manifolds, and probably a few other parts on the way, along with whatever you would have to change in the head.
I know 944online sells rebuilt heads, including the 16v, it may be a little steep because you don't have a core anymore.
I have seen stripped heads going for 500-700, but that was on e-bay a little while ago.

I'll sell you the one from my car for about $5k:

New Cams (less than 2k on them)
New valve guides (see above)
Valve job done with the above
new tensioner & chain

There's one catch, you have to take the rest of the engine (thrown rod bearing) and body (recent 951 brake upgrade) with it.

Haha, you could also take my '88 Stone Grey 944S for ~7k.

Getting the car to move under the power of a pair of hampsters would be easier.

In other words, not without a LOT of screwing around.

would a 928 S4 head fit? I don't think they are all that different...
