Question Weird moaning under hood!?

Upon pulling into the car complex tonight, I noticed a wierd noise, coming out from under the hood, like, "rrrRRRrrr" then it would stop, then repeat, stop for a few seconds, then repeat again.

No, I do not have power steering, but that's similar to what it sounded like.

I am trying to figure out if it's a belt, brake master cylinder, oil pump, or water pump?

I'm doing the 15 second test on the brakes, and adding a little Dot 3 to the brake fluid.

Not sure what to do, any suggestions? Just remember, I do most of the work myself, and help with friends.

Thanks,

Julie

My guess is waterpump. Were you so unfortunate as to have been a "milkshake" victim?

alternators have strange buzzing noise too or roaring. The bushings in the alternator could be going bad... have it checked out if this intermittent problem becomes ongoing and steady later.

Unhappy Brakes wierded out!

Thanks, guys, helpful so far!

Hmm...well, I have oil in the water, been that way since day one, did change the oil cooler seals, may have messed that up. Just enough to be annoying, not enough to mean anything. Car temperature stable at 1/4 to 1/2, goes up to 3/4 in traffic.

I pulled the car up to the garage, and I did the 15 second brake test, then it went to the floor. I had my roommate adding fluid, and me pumping it. We kept filling it until the fluid stabilized, at the max level. I think there's a leak, or a massive airbubble in the system, so I tossed Dot 3 in the trunk, and told my boyfriend to drive veery carefully, and downshift more.

I've never heard a waterpump go, but seen one go on the spot! Legoland's 951S, during the timing belt party...gruesome, but glad it happened there, got fixed.

Alternator tested out fine last week, when I had to replace the battery.

So, goes back the brakes...I obviously need to bleed it out, we didn't see any fluid leaking with the wheels on.

If I have to rebuild the master brake cylinder, so be it. Anyone have any suggestions? What about the slave cylinder, on where to purchase the kits?

Thanks, all, I've had a very bad two weeks, tossed over $2200 at cars and bills, running on empty financially right now...and to top it off, I blacked out, which turned out to be fluid on my carotid artery on my neck, due to shoulder and neck dislocation, over the past 7 months...now I know why I've been feeling so lousy, sheesh!

Did you run anything over? Like cat or dog? Racoon? Possum? Skunk? Wait forget the skunk, that would be pretty obvious...

Milkman? That was outta leftfield! ??

Julie, i personally think your car is getting hungry. Look at your avatar, i believe that may be happening slowly to your 944. Soon it will be asking for larger meals! (ala Little Shop...)

Noo, there's no cat on the manifold! Um, er, here, kitty kitty!

Actually, my cat's sleeping curled up on my pillow right now, waiting to kneed my hair when I sleep.

Huh, you all ran out of real ideas, and hijacked my thread!? Oh, the shame! I should sick my car's avatar onto you!

Or...I'll make one...heheheheh - DONE! Chomp, chomp!

Speaking of carpet, i believe Meguiars recently released a special carpet formula that not only cleans really well, but it deodorizes better than most. And its not a hastle to use. No steam cleaning BS, etc...

About the noises from under the hood, did you try using a stethoscope (they sell them cheap in some auto stores)?

Tony, glad you like my new Avatar, lol!

Hmmm...yeah, thought of getting a stethoscope before, that diagnosed a bad tension pulley, so I know they work.

Well, the wierd groaning went away after we filled the brake reservoir, and the slipperiness of the plastic under the pedals is kind of a dead give away. I threw some paper on the carpet over night, but it always come back oily looking.

Hmm, I wonder if the carpets should be steam cleaned afterwards, or what to get all the brake fluid out? Remember, my hood paint was damaged that way! Well, that's how she wound up in my hands...

Meguiars is always good, thanks, I'll check it out. Says it takes out oil and such, so it's worth buying this coming weekend, and doing a detail job on her! I'm thinking of cleaning the engine compartment up, to see what it really looks like!
