Car Suddenly Overheats

Hey guys,
I got home today and the car was operating as normal. As I went to a friend's house (didn't make it though), the temp gauge went into the red and the light came on. I pulled the car over and coolant started coming out of the expansion tank through the cap. I could get the temp to temporarily go down after revving but that even stopped helping. I replaced the rad cap, but it still has the same problem. All hoses are cool to the touch and I can hold the radiator all day long. Haven't tried replacing the tstat yet, but I can do that if needed. I don't notice any leaks or anything throughout the system. Haven't messed with the cooling system at all before this happened. Other symptoms include: fans not coming on, no heat when car is "overheating." I also unscrewed the rad cap when car was hot (big mistake on my part) and nice hot coolant came out at a rapid rate. Probably not going to do that again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Timing belt kit and new H20 pump are on there way as well.
Thanks in advance,
Justin

yup, you've got a tstat problem. one of my parts cars had that problem, revving helped a bit, but after awhile all the coolant in the block just heats up. i could touch the hoses, but not the WP... yikes!
the tstat is cheap, and if you have the right tools, fairly simple.
replace your coolant at the same time too![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

T-stat problem is closed. It's a 12$ part but a bitch to get out. Also you can take yours out and put it in a pot with water it should open at 83 degrees if not then it's bad and get a new one. Also you can test it by just putting the hose back on and fill it with coolant doesn't heat then you have the t-stat as your problem also if you haven't flushed your coolant out this would be a good to do just fill it with some coolant/water and run the car and see what happens if heats up then you need to start looking at the pump or or something else. Also you can hold the top radiator hose once you have a new t-stat in or without one if you feel pressure then the pump is working if not pump needs to be done.

We got that son of a bitch tstat in, but it sounds like the H2O pump is dying (it sounds like the H2O pump). So the car is out of commission until further notice. Hopefully Vertex will upgrade my order to overnight shipping if it hasn't shipped out yet...

crap. i nearly crapped a brick when the parts car just about overheated. luckily it didnt get hot and i got it home OK. i was worried it was the wp and i wouldnt make it to titusville. i did the simple solution and checked the tstat.

Well folks, the car doesn't overheat anymore.. Turns out the H20 pump had a very large amount of play in the shaft. Doze905 helped me with the belts and we used the Kricket.. Very consistent results and it turns out that the belts aren't as hard to do as I thought.
