Compare: 968 to 944S2
Why would you choose one over the other assuming all things (mileage, condition, extras, etc.) is the same? There seems to be an abundance of 968's for sale. Thanks for your opinion. Joe

I really want a 968. I got the S2 because it was too good a deal to pass up.
When I'm done re-doing the S2 I'd like to pick up a 968 for a daily driver.

Same car basically. The 968 has a few extra horsepower in the same engine, and i believe electronically adjusting valve-timing. (or something like that...) It was basically the S2 taken even further mechanically. The door panels have a different stitch on the inside, and some of them have a square clock in the dash. It also has a 6-speed transmission or tiptronic. Its the best version of the series Porsche put out. The big differences are in appearance. I like the 944 look better than the 968. The ultimate car would be a later model 968 with a 944 body.
I have ridden in a 968 on the track, and it felt virtually identical to my S2. A little quicker.
They are also a little more money!

I dont like the looks of the 968 as much as the 944 turbo or the S2. I like the flag mirrors, spoiler and concealed headlights of the s2 much better.

I also like the flag mirrors! I like the rear end of the 951/S2 much better as well. Something just looks...strange to me about the 968. Its a beautiful car and i would def. drive one. I just prefer the 944 look in general. The 968 kinda seemed like they were testing out the 993 looks before it was released. The fronts are very similar. The 951 look is pretty unique to the car. (not looking at Carrera GT, Lemans racers, etc...)

I like the 968 but it does look like the offspring of a S2 and 928. I kind of like the back with the side skirts. It's the front that is too rounded for me. Plus, they should have kept the hidden headlights from the 944.
Oh, and what a sweet engine, that 3.0ltr is. Only needs a K29 to be perfect.......

The adjustable valve timing was coined "Variocam." It is comparable to Honda's VTEC and i-VTEC systems as well as Toyota's VVTi and a few others.
info can be seen at http://autozine.kyul.net/technical_s...ine/vvt_31.htm
...and I agree with the previous posts; I think the 944 was a better looking car overall, though I am growing very fond of the 968s. Unfortunately there are VERY little in my area and cannot find one to test out ...in due time, i guess, lol.

Ive seen one black 968 in the few short years ive become a Porsche enthusist. It was driven by an older man, black with the 6-speed transmission. In incredible shape. I didnt get a chance to meet the owner, but left a Rennlist calling card under his wiper. Dont think he ever showed up.

I guess whether you like one car's styling over another is subjective, but there were many substantial mechanical improvements in the change from the S2's to the 968. (Actually, the drag coefficient on the newer car is slightly worse by a touch, go figure.)
1) the 968 lights are miles better, in night driving there is no comparison. Plus really cool tailights.
2) door handles and mirrors are much improved-do you ever see people changing from 968 parts to 944 parts? Nope, it's always the other way around.
3)major engine changes-forged rods and pistons, under piston oil cooling, higher rev limit, variocam, crankshaft dampener eliminated, more hp, more torque, better gas mileage and lower emissions, 6 speed gearbox-none of these are minor.
4)later (94 ad 95) cars had nicer 993 style seats and door panels.
With the exception of a handful of S2's they were built by Audi. 968's seem to be screwed together much better, they were built at Porsche.
This isn't a knock on the S2's, just trying to get the facts out there.

I love my 968 but I have to admit the S2 is a better value. Over here an S2 is a little more than half the price of a 968.
My brother has an S2 and to be honest I don't notice much difference in the driving experience - evolution not revolution as Porsche said at the time.

I personally LOVE the appearance of the 968s -- it's rather unique (sort of a 928 with a tint of 993). One additional fun factor is that you get the occasional "hey, it's that the new Porsche" comments -- mostly from kids, though.
I'd agree that S2 is the better value for your money.

I agree with Alex. While the 968 is a superior car to its predecessors, it's still in its own echelon above the rest as far as the market goes.
Unfortunately, many buyers don't have a clue as to the uniqueness of these cars as the culmination of the 944 line, like Damian pointed out, and sell them looking to "move up" to a Boxster. Since Boxster values have been falling steadily, it's becoming a pretty common swap.
I'd definitely take a 968 over a Boxster, myself, but like Alex pointed out, the 944 cab, and particularly the turbo cab are great value.
