New 944 owner, right into the deep end

But is there a way to know/check if an engine is original to the car? Or does it just come down to the SN of the engine matching the year of the vehicle to consider it "matching"?

Your numbers point to one of the 8246 944’s produced for the US market in 1987, the engine is also a 1987 number so is most likely original to the car.

What sort of numbers should I be seeing on a compression test on this '87 944? Hoping to do a test in the next few days before I pull and decide what to do with the much lower miles but unknown motor currently sitting in Franky.

We noticed a couple things and I wanted to ask, in case it is due to something a PO did to the car. Hopefully some of you can she light if these are normal and intentional design features, or not working properly.
Horn does not work unless car is "on" meaning key in and in turned on.
The window switch on drivers door that works the passenger window is opposite. push up to go down, down to go up?
The drivers door cannot be locked by hand pushing the lock down. Passenger door can be locked/unlocked manually but not drivers, requires key in door.
