Roof antenna.....
Hi,
Just a quick one....
I am piXXed off with not getting any good radio reception through my windscreen antenna.
I am toying with the thought of putting a roof mounted antenna at the back of the roof in the middle, the same kind that you see on VW's etc...
Has anyone done this or can anyone give a little advice .....
Many thanks

Hi adrian,
Hows England, For a brit x pat living in Belgium for the last 4 years I miss Black pudding.
Anyhow, yes the radio is recieving no problem, is just **** poor reception. I know that the radio signals here in belgium are not too hot but thats no real excuse.
I would not mind a bit of advice on how to boost the situation rather than going crazy with a drill and things on my roof... if you know what I mean....

RHD or LHD? Anywho, there should be an antenna booster mounted up under the dash where the antenna enters thru the firewall. Small black box about the size of a deck of cards. It's pwrd by 12V coming from the radio. Check to see if the 12V is there. If so, the booster may be bad.

I installed one of those Fuba antennas on my former Scirocco, and will likely end up putting one on my Jetta. I've even toyed with doing it to my 944, but haven't gotten around to it, and probably never will. While I can't speak for the 944 with any certainty, on the Scirocco it was a pretty straight-forward process. Find where you want the hole, measure twice and drill once. The only difficult part was pulling up the interior parts to run the antenna wire. In that case, there wasn't any special trick or anything.

I have a 968 antenna on my 951. It was easy to install because my car had factory phone antenna installed. I just removed that old tech NMT Phone antenna and install 968 antenna into that same hole. Now my radio works as it sould

I'm getting the impression that the pre amplifier for the windshield antenna does not work. Or that the pre amp is not hooked up. Should be a small wire that comes in with the antenna proper. Moulded to it.
I truly don't know how to test the pre amp. Some one that had a bad pre amp a few years back did replace the stock unit with and after market unit possibly the FUBA. The pre amp is behind the glove box.

I have added the amplified Fuba to the roof of my S2. Pretty easy installation, just time consuming. Also drilling a hole into your roof is not fun. Not really sure if my reception improved that much, but it looks nice

I also installed a Fuba. Measure across the panel, center up with the rear brake light if you have one, not a big deal to get it centered. The hardest part for me was getting a hole saw to open up the support frame member so that I could tighten the nut. I used a small dab of silicone around the base gasket.
The antennas come with enough wire to go down by the rear window trim pcs, then under the carpet(I took out the drivers seat) and up to the radio. I had about two feet extra. Great reception.

Have one ready to put on as I was going to replace the front fender group with the later model antenna-less fenders. That is till I was rear ended. Now I'll just save my money for a clean later model 944. Maybe even a turbo! Yeah!

Like Bret said, the Rennbay antennas come with plenty of cable and are easy to install. They are unamplified themselves but they get great reception. Better than the amplified windshied one anyway.
Bret, do you mind if I add that pic to Rennbay. It looks great!!!
