Try tightening the bolts in that area first. That may cure it, but most likely you'll need a new gasket there. You'll need a 6" long (150mm) allen socket. The bolts for the other side(by intake) are under the round cap screws over the "porsche". You'll need an allen for them also. To get it off, you'll need to take the timing belt loose and remove the belt from the cam gear.

"Smearing something along the juncture" just isn't going to work. Scott has given you the correct plan of action. Your belts are way over due anyway. Get them both done at once. If the leak isn't too substantial, check the oil, then drive it to the specialist. The 80K drive shouldn't hurt anything. If you are that nervous, check the oil at regular intervals during the trip.

"Hey kid if you can't talk nice then don't bother replying.
You got a real bad social attitude problem"
I don't know..........didn't sound bad or mean in anyway to me. And I have to agree with him on this point.

"if you could be bothered to read the post properly you will see that I wrote the car cannot be driven( because of all the smoke pouring out from under the bonnet.)"
Sorry, it sounds to me he's just suggesting something that will save you a towing bill, that would be on top of the repair. Heck, I think its a good idea!
You were asking for advice and/or suggestions....... right?
And by the way.....these cars don't have "rocker covers", they have a cam housing.

Actually, there may be something you could try. It's a bit ghetto, and I imagine it's messy to clean up......

You could try this stuff you spray on and it's supposed to stop pretty much anything that is leaking. Here in the states they cut a garden hose and spray this stuff on and it stops the leak. In OZ they apparently spray a strainer and it holds water.

On the racing list or forum there was someone from OZ who reported someone he knows sprayed this stuff on a leaking gearbox and raced for a year this way. Stopped the leak.

Like I said, kind of ghetto, but it might get you to the garage.

Oh, and I concur with the others. SeaCay's response seemed polite enough to me.

'Come to think of it i wouldnt drive it due to 70K ON THE BELTS!!!"

Why not??..........I only have two grenaded engines in my garage from PO's that ran 'em this long...........there only about 25K miles overdue.

Geo, I think you neglected to mention the name of the product you are referring to?

If it is pouring oil on the exhaust headers, it is not generally a good idea to drive it. I do agree there, but it would have to be more than a weep to make it smoke really bad. One thought is to clean it off real well, and start it, see how long it takes before it gets oil on the manifold, and starts smoking. Perhaps you could make the trip, or at least part-way before it gets bad. This would save you a few bucks on the towing bill.

For what it's worth, you must have really good luck to still have a running engine with that kind of mileage on the belts. I have seen them snap when only 5000mi overdue.

If it starts smoking right away, or is leaking much oil on the manifolds, then it is probably not safe to drive it there. Engine oil is not terribly flammable, but all that smoke under the hood can not be good. When you get it to the shop, either towed or driven, it would be a good idea to change the belts. That way you won't be out $1000+ for rebuilding the head when the belt breaks.

I let my 924S (same engine) go 80,000 miles on a timing belt and it cost me $700 to replace the valves doing the work myself. I thought my car would go the distance too. Good luck testing your 100,000 mile theory. You will be out of the only car you have a whole lot longer if you have to get the head rebuilt as well as replacing the timing belt. I learned the hard way and people on this list are just trying to help you out because alot of them have seen timing belt failures that could have been avoided.

If you want help then I will tell you that smearing gunk on the outside of the cam housing will just make the oil leak out wherever the gunk ends. The oil will leak behind the gunk and find a way out. A new gasket is the only way to go if tightening it doesnt help. And also mine was leaking in the same place and tightening did nothing for it. I replaced the gasket when the timing belt blew (btw that took me at least 20 hours to get the head and timing belt changed vs. 4 hours to just do the belts on my 944S)

Well, isn't this guy just the nicest fellow. I gave you the best advice I can, and here we all get this snap

Hmm... That's a little bitter, don't you think? And you go back and delete all your posts? What is the point of that, make us look like the bad guys?
I think that's the last time I will ever try to help you, I hope your belt snaps and you are out of a car.
