968 custom headlights
Has anyone ever tried or thought about changing the 968 headlights to have boxter or similar styled headlights. I know that they are not a direct fit but I'm talking about a completely custom job much like those Rice rockets that mold other headlights and tail lights from other cars. I really like the 968 body except for the ugly frog eyed headlights that pop up. Any advice or knowledge? I think that the boxter headlights would update the look of the 968 real quick.

Still, I would look at a modification that was a direct replacement for the headlights with a fixed insert. I am sure if an after market company were to manufacturer such inserts, they would sell quite a few.

thats would be stupid, then you would have a car that looks like all the bland latemodel porsches that look like they were designed by dodge.
and since porsche is going back to the round headlights, it would look outdated by the time your done, and probably decrease the value of the car, just like the price of the 996 and boxster that have dropped, and will drop like a rock when the 997 comes out.

Sorry to hear that you think that all the late models look like they were designed by dodge. I really don't think that it would decrease the value one bit because, they'd be going into a 968 cab and they didn't make a ton of those. Besides..i like the look of the new models. I had an 86 944 but I put a ton of turbo and 968 exterior parts on it to update it. I got my money back and then some after I was done. That was a 944 NA. So that says something there. Each to his own I guess

You can buy an early Boxster for less than a quality 968 Cab. Just buy a Boxster. The Boxster is depreciating faster than the 968 but a butchered 968 would be worth very little as soon as you started cutting.
Personally I love the 968 and feel like it would lose a lot of its personality without the headlights. Last week when I arrived at the airport the guard outside the parking garage complimented the headlights.

Well what I plan on doing is having the 3.0 changed to a 3.4 by huntley racing and having it turbocharged. So a boxter will look very slow when I'm done. Also I can keep the 50/50 weight ratio, and keep the durablity and reliablity of the 968 engine. I have had aweseom results with porsche 4 bangers I have a few other things I'm planning on doing ie: big reds and front splitter etc. Also who says that it would be butchered. I myself am a perfectionist when it comes to automotive work. I made a quick sketch of what it's going to look like when I'm done. Not quite done, but it gets the point across. I'll post a picture of it when I have time to scan it in. I also want to mold in the boxter side scoops into the sides just behind the doors. I saw this done on a 944s2 cab and I was speachless. It was an awesome piece of work For those around the San Diego area, you might have seen that red S2 Cab at the Q during the porsche autocrosses. So the scoops and have boxed rockers instead of the ones they have stock and a tasteful spoiler, nothing fancy or huge like rice rockets.

You'd better be able to figure on keeping that car forever, or be willing to take a huge bath on the car if you sell it. Take a decent 968, throw in a big bucks Huntley motor, chop up the front end to alter the nose, and you're looking at depreciation that will make a 996 look tame. But hey, it's your cash!

i'm pretty sure the 968 would look like **** if you put boxster light on it. I will try a photoshop job just to see for myself - but I'm not optimistic.
and if you DO decide to do it, for god's sake, buy a second set of fibreglass 968 fenders, so that you don't butcher the original ones. you know - make the job reversible.
Also, you do realise that the 968 already has a foglight/turn signal assembly on the bumper. Adding boxster headlight would suddenly give you another 2 foglights and another 2 turn signals. that would add a lot of wiring confusion and not to mention wasted weight.

Instead of throwing names around perhaps it would be wise to take the statement 'To each his(or her) own' to heart.
Have you seen pictures of the 968 Turbo RS front end? Perhaps once you see those you'll think more favorably of Porsche's design 968.net has excellent linkage.
Somone was doing a fixed headlight conversion a la the 993 on 968.net some time ago yet no updates have come in in the last several weeks. Perhaps try posting over there as to the project? It's a few pages back in the modifications section.
If extreme headlight modifications make you happy then I hope all goes well I would love to see the end result, though I'm partial to the Turbo RS front end look.
Best Wishes,
Sach
